Tom Glavine was Tom Terrific and Jose Reyes was the propeller as the Mets won their third straight game, and second straight as a shutout 7-0 over the Los Angeles Dodgers @ Shea Stadium. With the Phillies defeating the Marlins 14-8, the Mets magic number to clinch the NL East is down to a lucky 7 games.
Tom Glavine (13-6, 3.98 ERA) making his second start since his blood clot scare, went 6 1/3 frames pitching into the seventh inning only allowing 5 scattered hits, striking out 5 and only walking one. Overall, for Glavine it was Career Win #288 and he is now 12 away from 300 Wins. Tom Glavine should be in terrific form for the postseason.
The Mets started off with a bang like usual in the bottom of the first inning verus losing LA starter Brad Penny (15-8, 4.21 ERA). Carlos Beltran drove in his 113th run scoring Jose Reyes. David Wright would then drive in Carlos Beltran with a sac fly and his 107th RBI. The Mets struck again in the bottom of the second inning as Jose Valentin continued his hot-hitting with his 15th homer of the season with one out off Penny to make it 3-0 Amazins.
The Mets would finish off their scoring with a 4-run bottom of the sixth inning. Jose Valentin dro ve in another run (his 55th rbi) Then Jose Reyes hit an inside-the-parker HR, his 18th homer of the season (wow) scoring Shawn Green and Jose Valentin. Reyes raised his average to .301 and now has 74 RBIs on the season (wow!). Reyes sure has MVP Numbers for a leadoff hitter. Guillermo Mota, Roberto Hernandez, and Aaron Heilman combined for a scorless 2 2/3 innings walking 1 and recording 1 K nailing the game for the Mets.
The Mets (87-52) have now won 16 of 20 ball games. The Mets are 35 games over .500 for the first time this year. All the Mets have to do to win 100 games or more this year is go (13-10) or better down the stretch of the season to accomplish this feat only done 2 times before in their history (in 1969 and 1986). The Dodgers (74-66) meanwhile have lost 4 of 5 games. They only have a half-game lead over idle Mike Piazza and the San Diego Padres (73-66) for the NL West Division Lead. The Padres have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Philadelphia Philles (71-69) for the wildcard lead as well.
The Mets lineup tonight looks pretty much like what it will be for Game 1 of the NLDS versus whoever. It was: Jose Reyes, Paul Lo Duca, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, David Wright, Cliff Floyd, Shawn Green, Jose Valentin, and Tom Glavine. Every Mets regular got a base hit except for Cliff Floyd. Even Glavine had a single! LETS GO MAINE VERSUS THE DODGERS TOMORROW!
I will post my Online Poll again since no one commented on it yesterday:
