Reyes Hits for the Cycle

10
Vote

Prompted by Pean's classicly moronic statement that he would rather have Kevin Youkilis than Jose Reyes, Reyes responded by hitting for the cycle yesterday. In his first three at bats, Reyes homered, doubled, and tripled. In the 8th inning, needing only a single, Reyes hit a line shot up the middle for a basehit and became the first met to hit for the cycle since Eric Valent in 2004. The New York Mets lost the game in the top of the 9th when Billy Wagner loaded the bases with two out and gave up an 0-2 single to Brandon Phillips.

Upon hearing of Reyes' feat, Pean, joined by the rest of the computer simulator crowd said, "Reyes may run, hit, steal and be a catalyst for the best team in the NL. But he doesn't walk or get hit by a pitch enough. Kevin Youkilis, who is almost completely irrelevant to his teams success, now there's a leadoff man worth bragging about." The baseball computer simulator could not be reached for comment.

Saying that "the Mets lost" may give him fuel for a counter-attack...

Wow, low blows abound. Youkilis contributes a lot mroe than you realize. He is close to the top in pitches per AB, has a nice .315ish avg and has some power. On top of that, the mets lost despite reye's cycle...

I am a big believer in OBP, but any team would take Reyes over Youkilis....on a side not, what a bad, bad loss for the Mets last night.

I'll take a cycle from a Mets player for every game they lose.  :)

Reyes currently on pace for 141 runs, .346obp and 70 steals...and he's 23 years old. He is going to be a superstar if he can just stay consistant.

I'm looking forward to the NL all star team lining up Wright and Reyes on the right side of the field this year.

Wit his .413 obp, youkilis is on pace for 117 runs. With respect to power, Youkilis in on pace for 20 home runs, Reyes for 16.

Youkilis hasn't hit in the leadoff spot all year or else he would be on pace for more runs.

I hope you mean Youkilis hasn't always batted leadoff this year, because he does bat lead off and he has done it this year. I think I'm just misunderstanding...

Sorry, I meant he hasn't hit leadoff every game this year. Coco Crisp was originally the leadoff hitter, correct?

Consider this: Reyes has a .347 OBP with 307 total ABs (4.4 per game) meaning he gets on base once per game or 106.5 times total. Given that he has 61 runs scored, when he gets on base he scores over half the time! (58% or if you do the math, he scores about 1 time for every 5 ABs), , which I think is really good. Youkilis scores about 46% (However his ABs to runs scored ratio is the same! 20%) I’m sure some of these stats exist for real but they both will score about the same amount of runs…the difference is Youk will get more chances…

Who would you rather have as your leadoff man?

I'm gonna pay the price for this, but Based on that I go with Youkilis, he gets on base mroe, sees more pitches and generates an equal amount of runs per AB, and thats not considering power numbers. If I was down 1, bottom of the 9th, I want reyes because he is a much better run manufacturer, but you're talking leadoff. Youk gives the rest of the team a better chance. Teh real question is, who has the better offense and hence the ability to drive they're leadoff man in more. So, the answer is go w/ is youk: More pitches, better OBP, more power and equal ability to score runs...

Based on what JuTMSY4 said about going with the team with the best offense to hit him in is a great point. That could be why Youkilis is better than Reyes under that logic. All the logic shows is that the Mets have been better at batting him in this year.

Wow..to whoever wrote this article, was it neccessaray to include me in it, calling me out and my statement moronic? if you go back to the original article about reyes and OBP, i posed a question to MJD asking him what makes Reyes head and shoulders above Youkulous as a leadoff man, i dont know maybe to spark a debate? instead, i get no response to my old comment, but somone creating a new article about it by twisting my commment...fucking coward

Relax man. I agree with you and I'm not sure who wrote this, but isn't this technically an opinion article anyways. Regardless, If you check my comment I think I gave you the firepower needed to prove that Youkilis is just as effective leading off as reyes...

I have answered that question multiple times within that post. I am sorry if I did not respond directly to you. Besides his speed and game changing abilities, He and Kevin Youkilis are the same. It was a silly comment, is still a silly comment and always will be a silly comment. The only people who would make such an argument are either 1) Red Sox fans or 2) never played a game of competitive baseball in their life.

Here's some good advice. Don't brag about a player when his team loses. You'll have plenty of other times to brag about Jose Reyes when he has a good game and they win. Wagner stinks by the way.

Ya the Mets were 1 strike away from winning this game. Reyes is by far the catalyst for the best team in the NL.
