Reyes, Howard power MLB All-Stars past Japan

by user The shark

The MLB All-Star Team laid claim to the title of World Champs with a 5-game sweep of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball club in the semi-annual Japan All-Star Series. It was the first ever sweep (by either team) in the history of the series, which is played in Japan after the World Series every other year.

The fifth and final game ended in dramatic fashion. With Bill Hall on first and no outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes launched a deep walk-off blast to clinch the game - and the series. The capacity Japanese crowd chanted "JOSE, JOSE, JOSE" as Reyes circled the bases. "It was exciting for me when I heard (people chanting) my name," Reyes said. "I felt like I was playing in Shea Stadium."

The MLB All-Stars have won 9 out of the 10 installments of the Japan Series, the lone exception being 1990.

So exactly how much is 3,000,000 yen?
So exactly how much is 3,000,000 yen?

Phillies slugger and MVP candidate Ryan Howard was named Series MVP. In the six games (the first one ended in a 7-7 tie), Howard hit .558 with 3 doubles, 4 home runs, and scored 8 times. "To do something like that is special," the humble Howard said afterward. "I just wanted to come out here and have fun and try to put on a good show and help the team win. To be able to win the MVP here is great."

Having dominated Japan's best pitchers (whom he had never before faced) speaks volumes of Ryan Howard and his ability to hit a baseball. He is likely the game's next truly great hitter. And his performance in Japan may be a foreshadowing to that.

Other heroes for Bruce Bochy's squad included Andruw Jones (homered twice in the opener and again in Game Three), Jermaine Dye (two-run shot in Game One), John Lackey (2 hits allowed, 4 strikeouts in Game One), David Wright (a .353 avg, and a homer each in Games Three and Four).

How many of the US players would have qualified for Team USA at the WBC?

All but five or six. Actually I think the reason that this team was so much more successful against the Japanese team this time around is the time of year. Everyone was in "Game Shape". It's unlikely that MLB and the WBC governing body will ever move the WBC's start date but it would clearly make for more competitve and "professionally" played games.

Great hitters don't finish second in most strikeouts. He has a long way to go before being called a great hitter.

That stat is what made me say he shouldnt't be the NL MVP (well, that and his defense), but you can't say he's not a great hitter. He led the MLB in homeruns, even though he had a lineup that didn't require pitchers to pitch to him. He's a great hitter.

He's Adam Dunn with one more hit a week playing first base. Get over it guys

Reggie Jackson wasn't a great hitter either. There's a difference between being a great power hitter and being a great hitter. Reggie Jackson has the lowerst BA of any OF HOFer. He hit homeruns at the right time on the biggest stage, certainly not a great hitter. Again, what separates him from Adam Dunn, other than pinstripes?

Reggie Jackson wasn't a great hitter? So he made the oF for his defense? Oh, and name all the other guys EVER to hit 3HRs in a World Series game... (You only need two fingers to count them all)

Not hating on Howard, just saying he isn't as great as people attempt to make him out to be. His year last year is about Cecil Fielder's 1990 season. Old Cecil certainly isn't anyone you'd confuse with a great hitter. Just saying everyone is crowning him the king and hasn't done much yet.

Reggie Jackson is in the HOF because of World Series homeruns, and because of pinstripes. He's a career .262 hitter, that's not exactly Hall standards

I'm just defending the fact that there are great hitters that strike out alot...

Again, Babe Ruth led the league 5 times... and Yes, Reggie was great. His candy bar was good at best.

I'm not saying Howard is great, I'm just shooting holes in your argument to prove he isn't. Bring up that he's 26 instead and compare him to other 26 year olds... - ok, maybe he is great, huh?

What do these names have in common: Roger Maris, Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg?

They are the only players ever (without steroid suspicions) who compiled 58 or more home runs in one season. Along with Ryan Howard.

He's a great hitter in bloom. Accept it.

Tartan, how old are you? Obviously you don't remember that Reggie WAS the most feared hitter in the game for a long time. 14 all-star games in 16 years. 4 World Series rings (2 NOT with NY) and went to Led his league in HRs 4 times, 10th all time in HRs (even WITH the juicers) Why is he in the Hall of Fame again?

Cecil Fielder's 1990 season (26 yrs. old): 51 HR, 132 RBI, 182 k, .277 BA, .969 OPS

Ryan Howard's 2006 season (26 yrs. old): 58 HR, 149 RBI, 181 k, .313 BA, 1.084 OPS

NO COMPARISON

Lois Gonzalez, Jim Thome, Cecil Fielder, Greg Vaughn all have over 50, that isn't that great of a club. I'm saying to be a great hitter, it takes more than power, which Howard has plenty of, it takes great patience and a great eye. What made Barry Bonds so great, steroids or not, was his unbelievable eye for pitches, same thing with Manny Ramirez. He hasn't developed that yet, and until then, he'll just be a great power hitter, not a great hitter.

Compare these:

624 AB, 125 R, 187 H, 57 HR, 142 RBI, 87 BB, 122 K, .300 BA, 1.015 OPS

581 AB, 104 R, 182 H, 58 HR, 149 RBI, 108 BB, 181 K, .313 BA, 1.084 OPS.

Which one is better? And is one clearly better than the other? If so, which and why?

Adjust for the ballpark Cecil played in, and you could expect numbers to be at least equal with Howards

Because there are only 9 lineup spots. Each person plays defense (DH excluded) so comparing SS hitting vs 1B hitting isn't the same. Apples and oranges. The player is expected to do different things to win the game for his team. That's like me comparing tackles and saying Cato June is a better defender than Deion Sanders. Or using touchdowns and saying Joey Harrington is a better offensive player than Anthony Munoz, it doesn't work like that.

WOW! I'm done now. We had a very healthy debate going until you dropped that ridiculous and meaningless bomb on me. That makes no sense! Anyhow, I believe that Ryan Howard is blossoming into one of the best hitters of his generation. You disagree. Only time will tell.

Reggie Jackson was brought in as the all-time strikeout king to show that one can strikeout a lot and still be a good hitter. I compared players (Cecil and Dunn) that both have played 1B. Dunn doesn't play there enough, but does.

This sweep just solidifies my stance that the best baseball is being played in the US. Around the time of this year's World Baseball Classic, people were calling for a TRUE World Series, saying that it's clear the best baseball isn't being played in the US. To say that ignored the fact that the stars on almost every international team were MLB players. The best baseball is still being played here in the US, it's just not being played by American citizens.

yeah, Mr November hit ONE home run in that series... a series that they LOST. Why does Jeter get all the credit for winning when his greatest moments came in years they LOST??? His WSMVP you say? Other than it was a Loooooong time ago, 8 k's in 22 AB on top of his whopping 2 rbi (2 solo hrs) performance against the Mets. Of course, NO REAL Yankees fan would EVER brag about beating the lowly Mets, would they???
