The name "El Guapo" when spoken congers up memories of two things...The Three Amigos, and the Red Sox cult favorite Rich Garces.
I was reading a great article today: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/08/03/handsome_return/
And I was floored. Floored by reading a great story of a good man with a lot of Pride! (no pun intended) Rich Garces burst on the scene in 1996 with the Red Sox and played with them until 2002. What made him so special and loved by his fans was that he had an amazing abilitiy to perfom as a pitcher although he looked like the common upper deck fan.
He was the guy who sat next to you in the bleachers and talked baseball with you, but with one difference, he could go out there and back up his talk and play in the majors. Even now at age 36 and seemingly fading away into obscurity he bursts back onto the New England scene with the Nashua Pride ( http://www.nashuapride.com/) again as a pitcher and doing well for himself. I think it's a great story of a interesting man and one of the better reads in the Boston Globe this year.
To me and the Fenway Faithful I think it would be amazing to see Rich Garces warming up in that Red Sox bullpen with his cannon ball in hand and getting the call into game even if for just one more time. It would be great to watch all of Red Sox nation bow to him as he makes his way across the field at Fenway Park and takes his position on the mound.
If only in my dreams!
