Return of Doug Flutie?

by user Erooster

The Toronto Argonauts and Doug Flutie are in negotiations on a possible return of Flutie to the Argos. Doug had a plane ticket bound for Toronto, but backed out on Saturday night. He is concerned with what playing will do to his 43-year-old body.

The Argos are basically in a wait-and-see mode, as of today. Number one quarterback, Damon Allen, is still recovering from a broken middle finger on his throwing hand. Allen did do some passing today in practice. Number two QB, Spergon Wynn, got rocked on a brutal helmet-to-helmet tackle on Saturday, but returned to the team today after a stint in the hospital. He also threw some passes to evaluate his ability to play. The number three QB, Eric Crouch, saw his first CFL action on Saturday with typical results by a rookie in the league.

Team officials are planning on meeting later this evening to evalute their quarterback situation. If it is deemed that a quarterback is needed, then the team will procure one. Flutie's name is definitely on the list of quarterbacks wanted.

Coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons was the running back at the time that Flutie led the Argo offense. He is very eager to get Flutie back into an Argo uniform. According to the coach, he would like to see Flutie retire as an Argonaut. Initial reports say that Flutie would only play until the quarterback corps is fully healed.

Doug Flutie was a six-time CFL MVP. He guided the Argos to two Grey Cup championships, in 1996 and 1997.

Flutie could be a great addition to the Toronto Argonauts. However, their offensive line is struggling to keep the defense from the quarterback. Last week the Argos gave up five sacks (all on Wynn). Including Saturday's totals, the offensive line has given up 20 sacks in five games this season. A number that any quarterback should consider, prior to taking over the reigns in Toronto.

I think that it would be a bad move on the part of Flutie to seriously consider playing again, especially under the current conditions in Toronto. But what do you guys think?

I was wondering why they'd consider signing a 43-year-old retiree until I saw the names Damon Allen, Spergon Wynn and Eric Crouch. Then I waited for the list to continue... 4th string quarterback Tim Couch... 5th string quarterback Ryan Leaf...

Haha! I agree with your take on Wynn and Crouch, but Allen is a great quarterback (for the CFL). See my previous post on him, http://www.a..._of_the_King, for more information. But, the CFL is full of players that did not make it in the NFL or were not thought highly enough in NFL scouting or camps. Some of these players do return to the NFL to have decent careers, ie Flutie or Jeff Garcia.

That list of QB's if a list of who's who's of college failures. Ill cut Allen some slack, but damn...I thought Id go a lifetime and not hear the names Eric Crouch, and Spergon Wynn mentioned again.

Wait, didnt Jason White retire right after being drafted, or was that someone else?

Also, Ricky Ray is impossible to trade for in Madden, isnt he a CFL QB (is he good?)

I love the fact that Flutie did the drop kick, and it was the perfect way to end his career.

Ricky Ray plays for the Edmonton Eskimos. Right now, he is the stat leading quarterback in the CFL. His current stats are: 1804 yards, 8 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 107.7 rating.

I think that that is true for all pro athletes, once they retire. There is that longing to play for many years.

Well yeah, if you've been playing or doing the thing you love for more than half your life, it is darn near impossible to give up. Thats my explanation for why so many of our favorite players, legends, retire on such low notes. That's also why they become coaches in their respective sports, because they cant give the game up
