Rethinking Game 4 of the ALDS

by Npurinto

So as we go to the top of the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium, both the Indians and the Yankees must start looking ahead to Game 4. But first, let us reflect on Eric Wedge’s management of his pitching staff tonight. Against a potent Yankee offense, SP Jake Westbrook skated through his first four innings thanks in large part to four double plays. In the fifth things fell apart as the Yankees strung together four straight hits, concluding with a three-run home run from Johnny Damon.

Eric Wedge faced a difficult decision in the bottom of the sixth: bring Westbrook back for one more inning or go to the pen and try to keep the game within striking distance? Hoping to sneak him through the sixth and save the pen, Wedge let the starter start the sixth. He induced a groundball off the bat of Alex Rodriguez that Jhonny Peralta failed to turn into an out, to put it nicely. Curiously, Wedge yanked Westbrook and handed the ball to Aaron Fultz. Fultz proceeded to give up a base hit to Jorge Posada. A sacrifice bunt by Doug Mientkiewicz and an intentional walk to Hideki Matsui followed. Robinson Cano hammered a single to right that RF Trot Nixon misplayed allowing three runs to score. To all intents and purposes, the outcome of the game was decided.

I can respect the fact that Wedge faced a very difficult decision. Should he use his best relief pitchers in a game with the series at 2-0 with a likely Game 4 on the horizon the very next night? There isn’t a right answer. But if you are going to try to sneak Westbrook through an extra inning, he might as well have stuck with him than bring on Fultz. And once the bases were loaded, he needed to go to his best relievers. Even if LP Rafael Perez had given up the hit to Cano, you could have gone to a less important reliever in the later innings with the game out of hand. To leave Westbrook out there and then go to Fultz was poor management.

Now the question that ought to be considered by Wedge is whether to bring ace C.C. Sabathia back Monday night on three days rest for Game 4 Monday night? Even if the Indians were to lose Game 4, Fausto Carmona would still be available on Wednesday on full rest in Game 5 at Jacobs Field. It would be a gutsy decision for Wedge to go with Sabathia instead of scheduled starter Paul Byrd. But Byrd is a soft-thrower who the Yankees hit hard earlier in the season and while Byrd has been with the Tribe. In three starts against New York the past two seasons, he is 0-3 and has allowed seventeen runs in twelve innings.

An interesting side note has arisen since I started this article: why is the Yankees' most valuable reliever other than Closer Mariano Rivera in the game with a five run lead? Now, Joba Chamberlain has thrown thirty-eight pitches tonight and one must wonder about how long he’ll be able to go if needed tomorrow night.

Ugh. Now that the game is over I'm getting a familiar sick feeling deep in my stomach.

In game five. For now it's Byrd. And it's Cleveland. The whole reason Cleveland fans were loud and obnoxious about being up 2-0 and Yankees fans (Pean) were quite and humble is because both sets knew that the Yankees are the Yankees and the Indians are a Cleveland team. I'm sure most Tribe fans, like myself, went from an adrenaline high to a sick stomach and painful flashbacks. I still have faith that the Tribe will win it, but I also know and respect what Cleveland is capable of...

...capable of continuing the fun little game of "Beat the Yankees, end your team's curse" that's been going on for this entire century!

Who cares? This just keeps the Indians in tune while they wait to whoop up the fraudulent and entirely bogus Red Sox.

Hopefully this series goes to a Game 5. Same with the Yankees getting another shot at C.C. Sabathia. If it wasn't for Johnny Damon and Phil Hughes, the Indians would've swept. Don't be surprised if the Moose goes tomorrow night to face Paul Byrd.

Is Joe Torre happy or disappointed over winning this "must win or you're fired" game? I couldn't tell.

it's all a hoax to make a less believable scenario for God,... I mean Derek Jeter's next "Mr Clutch" moment... hopefully it comes in a game winning Home Run off of God, ... I mean Curt Schilling - you know the turning point before they don't win the World Series.

Nobody else thinks starting Sabathia in Game 4 is a good idea??? Why not give yourself two shots to win the series with each of your aces?

Because they're too big of pussies to throw their batting practice pitcher just to make it fun?

I don't think Joe Torre was thinking about his job security. I believe his players were and they responded tonight.

Yes indeed, Roger Clemens looked very determined to win one for the Gipper tonight.

A guy who has been fired from the Mets, Cardinals and Braves now manages the Yankees, a team that fired him after last season... He suddenly starts thinking about Job Securty? I think not...

Npurinto, I think it would be wise for the Indians to start Sabathia in Game 5, not Game 4. Both teams also have to think carefully who they start in the event they face Boston in the ALCS.

Byrd has actually pitched decent this season. If they both want to advance to the ALCS, here's what they have to do:

Yankees: Joe Torre is fighting for his job; if he doesn't make it to the ALCS, he's fired. So, it WOULD be better if Chien-Ming Wang pitches game 4, and then Pettite pitches game 5, in order for Torre to keep his job.

For Cleveland, I agree with you, stick with Byrd, then go with CC if you need to. Then start with Fausto in the ALCS.

Can't worry about who you want pitching against Boston til you win the ALDS. You win and then you go from there.

You can't think about the next series before this one is wrapped up cityhockey. Plus, if you win Monday with C.C., you got Carmona on Friday in game 1. Sabathia on full rest in game 2.

I don't want to look ahead at the next series (if there is one), but I'm only thinking of what both Eric Wedge and Joe Torre might be thinking as far as their starting pitcher rotation. Well, we'll see how the pitching matchups pan out for Games 4 and 5.

What the hell? Ernie Johnson just said that Chien-Ming Wang will start tomorrow night's Game 4 for the Yankees. I'm surprised, but then again ONLY IF they rally to win the series, Wang might be available for Game 1 of the ALCS.

Byrd vs Mussina in Game 4? Sounds like a 13-12 game to me...Yanks should definitely throw Wang, Indians should probably also throw CC, unless there's real reason to worry about him being much less effective on short rest. Completely agree with your comments about the Yankees' bullpen (they brought back Mo in the ninth, too)...that's Torre in a nutshell right there - a five-run lead and he still doesn't trust anybody but his top two relievers.

I couldn't agree more that it made no sense to pitch Joba a second inning when they're up 5. He's now basically out for tomorrow.

Torre is going with Wang tomorrow, not sure it's the best decision, but most likely he's doing it because Wang has been much better at home. Hopefully he can keep that sinker down.

If I'm Wedge I have to go with Sabathia, Byrd last start at the stadium 2 innings 7 runs.

That's true, too...Wang's home-road split is huge. There's another reason. Byrd's gonna get shelled again - a soft-throwing righty who can't strike guys out isn't gonna last long in Yankee Stadium...
