Remember When Beltran Was Fast?

Does anybody remember when Carlos Beltran used to be fast? I mean, in 2003, he stole 41 bases for the Kansas City Royals, and in 2004, he stole 42 between the Royals and the Houston Astros. Since coming to the Mets after the 2005 season, he's stolen 44 in a little over two seasons. You could probably throw out 2005's results though, as Beltran was suffering from a leg injury and was not at full strength for much of the season. Still, only 18 last year and 9 so far this year. That's not the 5-tool player the Mets signed.

We're talking about the all-time leader in base-stealing percentage, at an incredible 87.4%.

It's not just the base-stealing either. There are balls this year that are hit to center that he should have the speed to close on, but for whatever reason, end up falling in for base hits. Beltran's apparent loss of speed seems to have affected him at the plate as well. Last night, in the 1st inning of a 9-1 loss to the Dodgers, I noticed him ground the ball to third. I remember thinking, with Beltran's speed, he should be able to make that a close play. Wilson Betemit threw him out with plenty of time to spare.

You could make the argument that, because he has Carlos Delgado and David Wright behind him in the lineup, he's more hesitant to steal bases. I'm not buying it. A great base-stealer, like what Beltran used to be, will find opportunities to steal, and should end up with around 25-30 SBs a year. Is Beltran settling into the Andruw Jones mode of play? The "I'm already a great defensive outfielder, let me try and be a slugger and nobody will notice that I've gotten worse" way of thinking?

Maybe this is all in my head. Maybe I'm just trying to distract myself from the worst Mets baseball I've seen in over a year. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my conclusions.

Could it be that he was on something that gave him a little more speed?

You mean like what Alex Sanchez got suspended for a couple years ago?

I think it's Delgado/Wright. I know you disagree, but, I'd not be surprised if Delgado specifically asked him not to run as often. Movement at 1b can be distracting for a lefty.

And Beltran wasn't hitting third in KC or Houston either, he was mostly second. The Mets don't need him running. Its very difficult for lefty hitters to see runners on first, so the only thing bothering Delgado is his batting average.

I'm not ruling out the Delgado effect on him; Delgado could have asked him not to run...but when I look at everything...his loss of range in center field...his lack of speed from home to first (or maybe lack of hustle, I can't tell), this is the conclusion I draw.

I seriously doubt Delgado asked Beltran not to run. If anyone did, it was Willie Randolph.

I love Beltran, he's a great player, and an even better guy. I believe he isn't 100% healthy, and know from having a torn quad myself it is extremely painful and takes a long time to heal. I think George Steinbrenner is sorry he didn't make the deal work.

I know Beltran's a great guy and a great teammate, and that's why I'm starting to be convinced that he is still playing hurt. He wouldn't show up his teammates by not hustling (a la Manny Ramirez), so I'm beginning to agree with the injury standpoint.

Maybe it has something to do with age...or sucking?

I think it's probably a thing with his knees. Besides, hitting lower in the order really takes away your running options for the most part. You don't really need anyone else to run with Jose Reyes at the top of your order, either.

I agree that the not hustling to first might be a problem, but the lack of steals since coming to the Mets could just as easily be a managerial thing than anything else. It's possible that he might just not have the green light.
