Reggie Bush is Overrated!

The Beast claims that Bush is overated.

Thats right! I said it. So what if I did? Even as a USC fan, I must concur that New Orleans Saints rookie and former Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush is the most overrated player in the NFL today.

So what prompts me to write such a piece? Well after reading SI.com's weekly rookie rankings, I discovered that Reggie Bush had once again been selected as the top rookie.

I can't decide why he is so high. So far this season, Bush isn't even among the NFC's top 20 rushers, with only 196 yards on the ground this year. In addition to his poor rushing yards, Mr. Heisman has not even had his first rushing touchdown yet. In contrast, New England Patriots rookie, Laurence Maroney, ranked 10th by SI, leads the Pats in rushing yards with 361, and has scored 3 touchowns on the ground. Maroney is not the only rookie running back to post better numbers than Bush. New York Jets rookie, Leon Washington has 346 yards yards and two scores. Both Maroney and Washington have about 150 more rushing yards than Bush.

Okay, so he has been limited on the ground, but according to SI, Reggie does so much more.

By so much more, they mean 38 receptions and a key punt return for touchdown against Tampa Bay. Counting kickoff returns for touchdowns, punt returns for touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, and receiving touchdowns, Reggie Bush has a combined one touchdown this entire season.

In no way shape or form am I claiming that Reggie Bush is a poor football player. He has certainly been a major contributor on a very good Saints team. However, I just don't feel that Reggie is as good as SI, Fox Sports, and others make him out to be

Okay, Tiki Barber didnt have a rushing TD going into last week, but yet he led the league in rushing. Also have you seen the way a defense shifts and adjust everytime he is on the field. He is more a distraction and a diversion than anyone one else in the NFL. That alone makes him worth his pick. Also dont forget Deuce is a 1000 yrd rusher so you cannot throw him under the bus.

He might be a diversion, but how do you rank a player number one for being a diversion? You rank a player based on what he's doing, not what he's helping other people do by just being on the field. I think he'll be great, but Ray is right - they're not letting him do a lot right now. And the fact that he has so few rushing yards has very little to do with the fact that he's not getting that many carries. He's only averaging 3.0 yards per carry, with a season long of 18. Meanwhile, Maroney is averaging 4.2 yards per carry, and Washington is averaging 4.9. If Bush had that kind of averge, he'd have about 296 yards on the season. He's still trying to outrun defenders, and he can't do that in the NFL like he could in college. He's going to continue struggling to run the ball until he learns to run like an NFL back.

No mention of Marques Colston, who has been more valuable to the Saints than Reggie to this point?

Brees is helped *greatly* by Colston. If it was just Horn he wouldn't be looking so peachy right now.

he is overrated, for this season at least. the Saints have been handling him with kid gloves. perhaps we'll see more out of him in the 2nd half of the season.

In agreement. Bush's long run of the year is 18. He's only averaged 7.5 yards per catch. Not only is he not the top rookie, he's almost been a bust so far.

I never thought Bush would be that good of a pro. The guy can't run between the tackles against NFL type players and he has limited experience as a WR. Slash guys are great for offensive scheming, but he won't accumulate many stats. Valuable to the offense yes, great player statistically, probably not... unless he focuses more on his routes.

I agree. I imagine him being like a Brian Westbrook, where he can contribute quite a bit to the team with his versatility, but at the end of the day, he's not going to have great numbers and he won't be THE reason the team is winning. Someone said it earlier, and I agree, that the big difference on that team is Drew Brees, not Reggie Bush.

Yes because Brian Westbook is such an average back.... Wait thats right he's Donavans #1 target in a pass happy offense. If Bush can become Westbrook, thats not a bad existance to scrap out for himself in the league

Bush is looking more and more impressive. I think he is adjusting to the speed of the NFL, and is learning to be more patient waiting for holes to open up. I don't think Reggie's last two games were flukes. I fully expect him to be a great player.
