Reggie Bush agreed to a deal tonight that will pay him $26.3 million in guaranteed money, and up to $60 million over the course of six years.
I suppose I'm still confused with the decision by the Saints to draft Bush. I know Deuce McAllister is coming off a major knee injury, but couldn't the Saints have traded the pick, maybe to the Jets, and strengthened their team in several other need areas? They had no third round pick, and I just think they could have picked up some extra picks to move down to the Jets' #4 pick. They probably would have drafted D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and had at least a third rounder in addition.
I didn't like the offseason in New Orleans from the start, when they signed Drew Brees to a huge contract. Brees slipped a little last year, doubling his INT total and losing 15 points off his QB rating. He had the luxury in San Diego of playing with LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates, arguably the best RB/TE the league has seen in many years. With the Saints, he'll be throwing to an aging Joe Horn, a bitchy Donte Stallworth and an inexperienced tight end in Zach Hilton... not quite the same.
Nevertheless, Reggie will be at camp, and it remains to be seen how much PT he'll get. If Deuce is healthy, I can see them splitting carries this season, and Bush taking over the starter role permanently in 2007.
