Redskins get lucky

Don't know how many of you had the pleasure of watching my beloved Redskins narrowly escape another 4th quarter meltdown this past Sunday. As I fast forwarded my Tivo through the huddles and subpar commentary from the announcers (I can't get Sonny and Sam on the radio) out in the country where I live, I was once again appalled at the lack of production from the Redskins offense in the 2nd half. Run left for 1 yard on first down, then run right for 3 yards on second down then throw short of the first down marker on 3rd down. What happened to mixing it up on first down and throwing? What happened to play action pass and throwing deep to Santana Moss to stretch the defense? Is the Cardinals defense really that good? I think not! If the Redskins don't want another disappointing non playoff year, Joe Gibbs and his highly paid Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders better start mixing it up and throwing the ball downfield. Their schedule is definitely workable with 5 of their remaining 10 games against teams that are currently below five hundred. The defense is playing great and now we just need the offense to get it in gear so we can finish at 11-5 or even 10-6 and be a Wild Card team. Sorry to be so pessimistic but the last several years of heart breaking defeats have worn on me.

What happened to play action pass and throwing deep to Santana Moss to stretch the defense? Well, Santana suddenly became unable to catch anything thrown his way, for one.

Santana cannot catch right now and he is worried about his groin/hamstring

"Lucky" - is that what they call "having the Cardinals on the schedule"???

It used to be called "Bye Week"

It's the Cardinal Confoundment (it's worse than a curse).

You play the ugliest game possible, get outgained, turn the ball over more, gte sacked, your guys get hurt, and the Cardinals will find a way to lose in the least rational fashion.

They say the culture is changing, but here we are in Arizona seeing the same results, MORE penalties, endless missed opportunities and dumfounding, baffling losses.

ONE season above .500 (9-7 in '98) since moving to AZ in 1988.

"We are who we wish we weren't"

A toast to the theory of competitive balance!

The Redskins have too much clutter in their offense play calling schemes. The injuries to the offensive line have Saunders held hostage. Throw in the fact that Joe Gibbs is so scared of turnovers, that he wont do anytihng that might risk losing the ball, and you have a puddle offense that wont attack down field.

you have a puddle offense that wont attack down field. Which negates the real strength of this offense, which is Jason Campbell's ability to deep ball. All the analysts always say that the Redskins need to "get back to Redskin football" and pound the power running game, when they don't really have a power running back! Portis has never been a power guy (and it's becoming clearer every week that he's just another product of the Denver running back machine), Betts has underperformed, and the injuries to the offensive line have been massive. The Redskins need to concentrate on throwing the ball to Chris Cooley, Antwaan Randle El, Santana Moss (once he gets his head back on straight), and use the passing game to set up the running game, instead of the other way around.

The Skins have no identity as a football team. When the won the Super Bowl in 90 or 01 they were a high scoring team, that was led by Mark Rippen. Theyhad a power running game to go along with that, and eat up time. Now they do not run the ball agressively if they did Caveman Sellers would see the rock more.

I agree with the Offensive line devastation. It's hard to ask your running backs to get a 100 yards when they are running behind the likes of Mike Pucillo. As I stated earlier, when you get so predictable on first and second down it makes it easy for the defense to walk up their linebackers and secondary to help stop the run. Unless we do something drastic to mix it up, this week against New England could be a laugher. One thing to note: Greg Williams will have a few surprises in store for the Patriots this weekend, potentially using the "poacher" approach he used against Detroit, thoroughly confusing Kitna all day long. Brady is obviously a much better QB than Kitna, however, if you watched any of the game against the Dolphins, he had threw two up for grabs on the goal line that were incredible catches by Randy Moss. The key to me will be defensive line pressure by the skins as you know they will be dropping 7 potentially 8 back into coverage.
