Redskins' Daniel Snyder Goes Crazy in FA Market Again

Daniel Snyder, the big-spending owner of the/my Washington Redskins, has done it again. He made two fairly big splashes today in the form of fairly high profile free agent signings. Washington signed linebacker London Fletcher and ex-Redskin cornerback Fred Smoot to 5-year deals, and apparently he's not finished. Snyder also has his eye on cornerback Travis Fisher and offensive lineman Leonard Davis, who is reportedly deciding between Washington and the Dallas Cowboys. EDIT: ESPN.com is reporting that Davis is going to sign with Dallas.

As much as I appreciate having an owner who's willing to spend money to make the team better -- I certainly don't wish that they were the Royals or something -- but the fact is that a great deal of Snyder's free-agent acquisitions over the past few years have been relative busts. He dished out big bucks last season for Antwaan Randle El, who hasn't lived up to the size of his contract, and Adam Archuleta, who was a complete disaster. Strangely enough, though, I think the price they paid for Smoot is probably lower than it would have been a few years ago if they had signed him to a deal instead of letting him leave for Minnesota as a FA.

If it were me, I would quit blowing all of my cap space on overpriced semi-veterans and look to stockpile some draft picks in order to build a good young team surrounding new starting quarterback Jason Campbell, who looks to be the team's future. No doubt, they addressed big needs on defense by signing Fletcher and Smoot, and you can never have enough offensive linemen, but the fact is that the 'Skins don't have a pick in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounds of this year's draft. Frankly, I think that's just plain irresponsible, especially when the team is clearly not in the position it would need to be in to make a "win now"-sort of run at a championship.

You'd be complaining more if he did nothing. I think it's good that the owner is prepared to spend money on the team. The players he's signed may have been flops, but he wasn't to know that.

I disagree Alex. Signing Free agents is not like signing a rookie. You know what you are getting with a free agent, there is tons of game tape of them playing on the field and you know what they are capable of. Dan Snyder has repeaditly signed high price free agents simply because they have a big name, while ignoring the draft and the development of your players. Its good to have an agressive owner, but he has to be able to do some homework.

The football (our sort) team I support, Aston Villa used to have an owner that bought precisely nobody special, and all our minimal "big" signings were flops. But the point is that if you have an owner that is prepared to buy in the people, at least you know that there is support from the owner - something no coach the team I support ever had. Yes, he should focus on the draft mainly, and he shouldn't compromise that many draft picks, but my point that spending money isn't bad still holds. Sure it should be spent right, but he should have the people around him to do that job for him.

AGain, I have no problem with a owner opening his wallet and spending money. Teams incounter a problem when their owners spend money simply for the sake of spending money, and keeping their fans quiet because they can go to their fan base seach season and say "Look we are trying" When in reality they have made no legitiment moves to improve the team.

The biggest problem I see is that the Redskins don't really have a general manager to speak of -- as far as I can tell, Joe Gibbs (he also serves as Team President) and Snyder make the decisions re: personnel. I'm not sure that's the best structure. That's a big problem with a lot of football teams -- the impetus is for coaches, especially ones with a background in college coaching, to have a really big hand in team construction and signings (think Mike Holmgren, although I don't think he has that power anymore). There has to be someone in the system whose job it is to "do the homework" and control the team development side of things. In my opinion, that isn't the head coach's place nor the owner's. In my opinion, the ideal owner is one who is passionate to win and is willing to spend the big bucks in order to do so, but who acknowledges that they aren't necessarily an expert in the field of team construction and delegates that responsibility elsewhere.

I feel sorry for Skins fans, Smoot is a washup. Alex- I am a fan of the Minnesota Twins, and while I wish they would go out and sign a big name, I am somewhat happy they don't. They are winning on a smaller budget. A good team (I.E. My Pats) when they have cap room and a high price FA will tag the player (Seriously, If anyone wants to Sign Sammuel for 10+ mil a season and give us 2 First round picks; go ahead) and make a list of a few players that they think can improve the team, and give them a price tag; then go out to sign them. Signing Major wash ups is not the way to win Championships

Redskins win the FA spending competition each year. Give the club some glory. They will finish 6-10 again come the fall....
