Reds Deal Kearns for Bullpen Help

11
Vote

The Cincinnati Reds finally traded away a piece of their outfield to help their bullpen by getting Gary Majewski and Bill Bray from the Washington Nationals.

The biggest names the Reds dealt in the eight-player deal are outfielder Austin Kearns and shortstop Felipe Lopez. The Reds also sent reliever Ryan Wagner, a first-round pick in 2004 who has struggled the last two seasons.

The Reds also picked up shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris and pitcher Daryl Thompson. Clayton is likely to replace former-all star Lopez as the starting shortstop.

Majewski, Clayton and Bray are expected to report to Cincinnati in time for the game against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. Harris will report to Triple-A Louisville and Thompson to Sarasota in the Gulf Coast League.

Facts and Figures:

  • Majewski recorded a 2.93 ERA for Washington last year while leading the pitching staff with 79 appearances, a franchise record for a rookie. During the first half of this season he went 3-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 46 games.
  • Bray, 23, made his Major League debut this season and has a 3.91 ERA in 19 relief appearances.
  • Clayton is hitting .269 with 22 doubles and 8 stolen bases.
  • Harris, 25, has appeared in 17 games for the Nationals.
  • Thompson, 20, has been playing for Vermont in the Class A New York-Penn League where he is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 4 starts.
  • Kearns, 26, this season for the Reds hit .274 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 87 appearances.
  • Lopez, 26, hit .268 with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 85 games during the season's first half.
  • Wagner, 23, has spent the entire season in the minor leagues at Louisville, where he has posted a 6.34 ERA in 35 relief appearances.

This seems to be a good trade for both teams. The Reds have had too many outfielders for too long. The Nationals needed a fresh young face. Nice job by both teams, but I think the Reds got the better deal.

I wonder how this will affect Eddie G's role with the Reds.

It won't. Eddie G is the closer. Coffey is the setup guy. The bums the Reds got in this trade fill in the rest.

Nice to see the Reds acting like a team that has a shot for once. The more they act like a playoff contender, the better chance they have of actually becoming one. The NL is so wide open, there's no reason why a team like the Reds shouldn't be active right now.

Awesome pickup for the Reds. Majewski is better than Guardado. I don't know if he can close, but he certainly bolsters that bad bullpen. And, much as I liked Lopez, they didn't need his bat nearly as much as they needed a bullpen. And the Nationals finally have a shortstop that can hit a little. That's been an enormous hole for them. I agree, good move for both teams.

I would have totally given Jae Seo and Jorge Julio up for POWERS this off-season.

I think the Reds gave up way too much. They should have kept Willie Mo.

I completely agree. The Reds traded 3 legit major league players for 2 middle relief guys.

Good point. Giving up both Willie Mo and Kearns in one season doesn't seem like the smartest idea. The Pena trade has worked out but I have a feeling this one will come back to bite them.

I strongly disagree. Pena has stunk since getting traded, and truthfully wasn't that good for the Reds. He showed flashes, but you can't hold on to a player because he occassionally does good things. Same thing with Kearns. He's battled injury problems, and since a breakout season in 2002, he hasn't batted better than .270. His OBP and SLG haven't been great either. His OPS in 2002 was .907. In 2003 it was .819, in 2004 it was .740 and in 2005 it was .785. So far this season, it was .843. I don't think Kearns is such a huge loss for that team.

I'm not so sure about trading a power-hitting outfielder for a reliever. Bullpens are notoriously inconsistent. This reminds me of the Brian Giles-for-Ricardo Rincon trade that the Indians made years back. It worked well for the short-term but I'm sure John Hart is still kicking himself over that one.

Well, all trades for pitching are usually crapshoots. That's the just the nature of the position. The thing is that the risk reward leans toward getting the pitching. You can win in the playoffs without an okay hitting power outfielder. You can not win without a bullpen.

Here's the sort of reaction this trade is getting from Reds fans:

Folks I just got of the phone with two of my friends that are season ticket holders for the Reds and informed them of the trade and they did not believe me!!!!!!

I told each one of them to check it out on the net, they just called me back and I thought they were both going to start crying....

Lopez could be the steal of the trade - he's young, was an All-Star last year, is a fantastic basestealer. He's a top 5 NL shortstop for sure. On the Nationals side, it gives them a nice young infield: N. Johnson, Zimmerman, and Lopez.

A top 5 SS in the NL and a power-hitting OF for some relievers? I realize the bullpen was having troubles, but that seems like an awful lot to give up. The biggest thing here is that Jim Bowden, IMO, got a steal, and for that I'll be getting a generator and stocking up on canned goods.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is this is exactly the kind of trade the Nationals needed. Their ownership is in a tight spot, the team is in last place and they need to show the fans they want to get better and bringing in two young guns like is great.

you put in every players age EXCEPT CLAYTON. Sure, I'd love to have a 36 year old journeyman past his prime over a 26 year old allstar basestealer. Im going to reiterate what everyone else has stated, and ask WHY to the reds??

Every player's age but Clayton's was in my source article and I was feeling lazy. Plus, I thought it was assumed that everyone knows Royce Clayton was old.

And the new Nationals are supposedly going to get here in time for the Pirates series starting Friday. Oh, and that's Bill Bray not Bill Breay - I know you get it right later, but the link is off. Didn't notice Lopez was an All-Star, thanks Reds for taking Clayton for him. Bill Bray and Majewski can be quite good, but there were many games I attended (at least in Majewksi's case) where he struggled (and one or two games where Bray struggled)). I have no problem, as a Nationals fan, with this trade. Oh, and the owners of the Nats have been saying that they are going to basically rip apart the team, everyone except for Zimmerman would be traded and the deals would be for the future, the far future, not today, not next year, not the year after that. With that in mind, I'm actually surprised the Nationals were able to get major league players, young good ones. Oh, and I mentioned Escobar doing well so far in CF for the Nats in my opinion, but what I only hinted at is that he is very very injury prone. A strong gust of wind, off to the DL he goes (harsh, I suppose).

I wonder if this deal indicates more to come from the Nationals in terms of trading away some of their marquee players. I could definitely see Kearns being moved again before the deadline (especially with all the teams looking for a bat), and the rumors of Livan Hernandez to the Mets don't seem to be going away.

There are actually people supporting this deal???? This is one of the most lopsided trades I've ever seen. If this were a fantasy league, that trade would've been vetoed. Cincinnati gave up good, young talent and got shit in return. I'm not a Reds fan, but if I were I'd be scared. Any GM that gets fleeced by Jim Bowden isn't a guy you should feel comfortable with.

Cincy didn't get hosed. If you look at straight up talent recieved versus talent given, then yes, the Reds got hosed. But you have to look at things based on need. They needed bullpen help. They've still got an incredible offense. I'll say it again - I think Lopez is the only thing the Reds truly lost here. Don't go on reputation, look at Kearns' numbers. He wasn't producing. If this is one of the most lopsided trades you've ever seen, you haven't been paying enough attention.

.274/.351/.492...they're not the huge numbers that people were expecting him, but that's producing. And he's only 26. Over the next few years his numbers will improve. In return they got a couple of middle relievers who aren't especially talented. They're not bad, but they're guys who are a dime a dozen. Cincy probably has two just like them on the farm that haven't had a chance yet. The Reds don't need pitching. They need to win games. Kearns and Lopez would've helped them win a lot more games than their new bullpen guys.

Steak, those are only his numbers for this year. Look at his numbers the last three years. Look at his problems with injury. Consider the fact that the Reds have felt it necessary to demote him to the minor leagues from time to time during his major league career. He's still somewhat young, but I have a hard time imagining he'll top what he's done so far, especially in a weaker lineup and a bigger ballpark in Washington. I really don't think the Reds lost much there.

Dime a dozen? Bray is a good/great young lefty reliever, and those are not a dime a dozen. I see a long great future for Bray in Cincinnati pitching in the late innings and shutting down, or stopping the other team from coming back. Majewski can be inconsistent, but he apparently had the best stuff in the Nationals bullpen, according to the opposing players, according to an article in the Washington Post. Cincy is playing for the playoffs - Clayton is a better fielder and has actually improved offensively this year (at least for a 36 year-old) in the #2 slot in the batting order, Thompson was the #10 prospect in the Nationals minors, Majewski and Bray are producing now in the majors and while the Cincy minors might have two just like them, both Majewski and Bray are doing well right now and will vastly improve the Cincy bullpen. Remember - a great bullpen can close down the other side, keep them from scoring. A bad bullpen? Adds to your loss column. Apparently the Reds had a bad bullpen before this trade. And Harris is a 25 year-old who wasn't able to stay up in the majors earlier this year when he had the chance.

I'm just upset my Indians weren't the ones to fleece the Reds like that. I'm guessing every smart GM in baseball will be lining up at the Reds' door to ask, "Uh, need anything else, guys?"

I was thinking the same thing. There are 28 GMs in baseball right now kicking themselves saying "Wait....we only had to give up -that-?!"
