Wednesday Night At The American Airlines Center, the Dallas Stars fell to the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1. With the loss, the Stars missed an opportunity to pull with one point of San Jose, as the Sharks lost to Predators 5-0. Yet, the Stars couldn't capitalize on the change to pull even closer to their divisional rivals and still sit 6th in the Western Conference.
After a scoreless first period, Dallas got the scoresheet in the second period. Mike Ribeiro scored the only goal for the home team at the 6:34 mark of the frame. Thanks to the power play, the Stars were able to grab the lead and maintain it for the rest of the period.
Yet, Ribeiro's tally was not enough as Detroit scored three times in the third period, allowing the visitors to post two points before leaving the Lone Star State. Henrik Zetterberg, Red Wings forward and a player that would have played in the All-Star Game had he not been injured prior to the mid season classic, scored the game-winning goal and two assists.
With the win, the Red Wings continued their dominance over the Stars, winning all three games this season and setting up the possibility of a regular season sweep later on this season in Detroit.
Notes:
Smith Good, But Not Enough:
Stars Backup Goalie was given the start and made 29 saves, but his effort was not enough as the Stars offense could only muster one goal on the power play, failing to score at even strength and giving the home team a thin margin that they could not maintain.
Yet, Smith's play was not bad. Infact, he was the main reason why this game wasn't a blowout. Unfortunately, the Stars just couldn't handle the Red Wings effort and skill in the 3rd and it cost them.
As for the possible goalie controversy, that should cool down as Marty Turco is expected to start on Sunday vs. the Sharks and he has played brilliantly against San Jose throughout his career and I expect that brilliant play to continue in his next home game.
Nagy a big hit, but no points....
Stars forward Ladislav Nagy played in his first game since the trade that brought him to Dallas from Phoenix and shows flashes of what he could do. Yet, in his first game, the Stars offense struggled, only scoring one goal on the night.
If anything, Nagy will be remembered for the physical play, tying for second on the Stars in hits in Wednesday's game vs. Detroit with 4. The only Stars players with more hits then Nagy was Joel Lundqvist, who was credited with more hits in the game.
Tippett Hates Detroit
Stars Head Coach tried everything to change his recent string of bad luck against the Red Wings by adding new players and changing his starter from Turco to Smith.
Yet, the result stays the same, another loss, dropping his record to 2-8-5 in his career versus the Red Wings.
Hopefully, this trend will be righted and right quick, as the Stars may have to face the Red Wings in the playoffs.
