Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an avulsion on his right middle finger. He will miss two starts and will most likely start again on May 29th at home against the Cleveland Indians. Until now, the Red Sox have not had a pitcher miss a start due to injury. Devern Hansack, who threw a rain-shortened no-hitter in the final game of the 2006 season, will be recalled from triple-A Pawtucket to take Beckett's place in the rotation. Hansack is only 1-4 so far for the PawSox, but his ERA is a strong 3.89 and is striking out over a batter an inning. Hansack's first start will be an interleague contest against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.
At 7-0, Beckett is baseball's winningest pitcher so far this season, and AL All-Star manager Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers said that if he had to make the decision today, Beckett would be starting the All-Star game for the junior circuit. Beckett has compiled a 2.66 ERA and a tidy 3.92 K/BB ratio. His WPA of 0.52 doesn't reflect how well he's pitched, but he has been worth 11.69 BRAA and has one of the best run-support numbers in the majors.
