Red Sox grab JD Durbin

Shortly before activating set-up man Mike Timlin, the Red Sox claimed JD Durbin off waivers from the Diamondbacks. Durbin had one terrible start for Arizona this year, allowing 7 ER in two thirds of an inning, but should be a valuable depth arm in the minors. He posted a 2.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 8.19 K/9 in 16 starts covering 89 IP last year with AAA Rochester. As Durbin is out of options, the Sox had to designate him for assignment before sending him to Pawtucket; if he clears, he should provide another possibly Major League ready arm at AAA, to go with Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen. Worst-case scenario for Boston is that someone else claims him, like the Red Sox themselves did to Arizona. I think it was a good pick-up by Theo Epstein, although he should be spending his time looking around for a 5th starter and calling Roger Clemens every 15 minutes to see if he's made up his mind yet.

EDIT: Durbin was claimed off of waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils have 72 hours to decide whether to put him on the 25-man roster or designate him for assignment. Philadelphia is his fourth team in the past month; he trained with the Twins, then started a game with the Diamondbacks before coming to the Red Sox and now the Phillies.

Just what the Red Sox need, another depth arm in the minors. Nice pickup.

no such thing as too much pitching, that's right. We learned that the hard way last year. You never know! 'Chair up!

J.D. "The Real Deal" Durbin was supposed to be a lights-out starter for the Twins. Unfortunately, he never recovered after being shelled in the majors in his ML Debut. Now, he is going to be a journeyman for years to come. He has been a knucklehead.

can you say "designated for assignment". He'll look real good in a Pawtucket uni.
