Red Sox acquire Coco Crisp

8
Vote

The Boston Red Sox finally got their replacement for centerfielder Johnny Damon, landing Coco Crisp in a six-player deal with the Cleveland Indians. The mercenary Damon bolted for the New York Yankees in free agency in December, leaving the Red Sox with a gaping hole in center field. The switch-hitting Crisp, 26, came at a hefty price: third base uber-prospect Andy Marte, acquired by the Sox earlier in the offseason from the Atlanta Braves. In addition, the teams swapped relievers, with Guillermo Mota heading to Cleveland and David Riske coming to Boston, as well as catchers, with Red Sox prospect Kelly Shoppach trading places with backup catcher Josh Bard. The Red Sox are reportedly paying $1M of Mota's salary.

Crisp will match or exceed Damon's production for the next few years, so this has to be considered a slight upgrade due to his relative youth and low cost. Trading Marte could come back to haunt the Sox, though...

I don't get it. The precursor to this deal was the Rhodes/Michaels deal. Why didn't the Sox just trade Mota for Michaels and keep the prospects?

I would have preferred that route too - but apparently the Sox front office has been infatuated with Crisp for a while.

I think this was a bad move. Marte will haunt the sox, like Kazmir haunts the Mets.

Well, I think it's safe to say Coco Crisp is no Victor Zambrano...
