Red Sox Trade for Gagne

Now, this is different from the Red Sox "getting Gagne." Very different. There are reports that the Red Sox and Rangers have come to an agreement to trade Eric Gagne. Gagne has a limited no-trade clause, which includes the Red Sox as a team he cannot be traded to without his permission.

Gagne has 177 career saves. He has 7 career blown saves. That's 96.2%. This season he's got 16 saves in 17 attempts, with a 2.16 ERA and a 1.050 WHIP. He's had some injury problems the past few years, but he's also been one of the best relievers thus far in the 21st century.

But he has that limited no-trade clause. And the question will be asked "What will his role be with the Red Sox?" Does he become the closer? Does he become a platoon closer with Papelbon? Does he become a set-up pitcher? Most likely, he will become the primary right handed set-up option in front of Papelbon. He also becomes the #2 closer on the team, in case Papelbon has worked the previous 2 nights or something.

He also has an incentive clause in his contract for Games Finished. He probably won't be finishing very many games, so the Red Sox might rework that clause and guarantee the money he would have gotten paid had he reached the incentive.

With Mike Timlin's health a big question mark, Manny Delcarmen having a mere 82.1 Major League innings under his belt, and Brendan Donnelley just starting to throw a ball again, we needed some help in the pen.

If this trade goes through, the end of our bullpen looks really strong. We have Papelbon in the 9th. Gagne and Okajima for the 8th and 7th. Delcarmen for the 6th (if necessary), and so on.

But what did we give up? Kason Gabbard, David Murphy (AAA Pawtucket), and a GCL prospect. Giving up Murphy isn't a big loss considering we have Moss and Ellsbury still down in Pawtucket. Gabbard is the big part of the deal for the Sox. Kason was 4-0 in 7 starts with a 3.73 ERA. He pitched well, but it seemed to me as though he was pitching above his head. He may end up being a very good starting pitcher in the Majors, but Gagne is a proven reliever.

I like this deal. I like it a lot. It reminds me of the Dave Roberts acquisition in 2004. We got Roberts to be a 4th outfielder and come off the bench to run, even though he was a starting outfielder and wanted to be a starting outfielder. Gagne will be asked to set-up, even though he is really a closer.

THIS JUST IN Eric Gagne has agreed to waive his no-trade clause and be a set-up pitcher.

I lvoe how you spin all the negatives to positives. Sounds like a true fan whos way to excited to think straight. Gagne will not accept being the setup man, its that simple. For the rest of the year, probably not an issue. In the offseason? A major issue if Paps remains the closer.

Well he's a free agent at the end of the year, so if he doesn't want to be the set-up man in 2008, he will sign with another team.

Insan, do you know Gagne? If he waives his no trade clause to join the Red Sox, then by default he is accepting being the setup man. He is not going to overtake Papelbon as the closer. Maybe he just wants to try to go to the World Series, and he wasn't going to do that with Texas.

I know Gagne because he said it. He stated he wants to be a closer. If he waived his no-trade clause the Sox probably said something to him behind closed doors.

So by that logic, you are saying that the Red Sox told him behind closed doors that he will be the closer. So, what are they going to tell him when he is not the closer once he gets to Boston? They wouldn't tell him that because if he was promised that and that it does not happen, he is just going to be a cancer in the clubhouse. That makes no sense.

I said that he will be the setup man THIS year... meaning 2007. Next year is the issue. That's when he'll either get the job or cause problems.

without a doubt...gagne's seeing a shot at some serious exposure and he's gonna close out a number of games...plus papsmear is gonna start next year (and you think the sox flinched about moving a possible rotation piece...nope they already had a plan)

Besides...in an ideal world Papelboner as a starter and Gagne as a closer is much better than papsmear as a closer and gabbard as a starter...if everything goes perfect...

A pre-2008-prediction: Paps will finish the year with an ERA of over 4 but under 5 as a starter.

Paps will not be starting in 2008. Bank on it. Your probably right with that ERA prediction though, but he wont be starting next year.

I wouldn't bet my mortgage on that one. It'll be Beckett, Dice-K, Paps, Lester, Wakefield.

And you're basing this prediction for 2008 on what exactly?

A hunch, it'll be his first year as starter. Can't really expect him to be dominate. Will he be good in the long run? Probably...

He doesn't have enough pitches to be great in a starting role. He also will not be able to throw his 95-97 mph fastball throughout the whole game like he can for one inning. He is going to have to pace himself or he wont last past the fourth inning. That means that he wont be as dominating as he is now as a closer. It's not going to work. Look for Clay Buchholz to have a great spring next year and be the fifth starter.

Gagne is about as proven a commodity as Gabbard...except Gabbard is young and Gagne is old...with 2 elbow surgeries...

Erm, 80+ consecutive saves seems more "proving" than being a rookie who only pitches well at home.

Gabbard's had 4 starts in the big leagues. Gagne's been around much longer than that. I know injuries change things, but Gagne's proven he can be great before and he's proven this year that he can pitch well after his surgeries.

Ok...i'm gonna calm myself down...i almost typed in all caps...

Perhaps not you guys specifically, but multiple AGMers keep telling me McNabb is injury prone and won't finish and season...and yet AGMers are also telling me Gagne is a proven commodity that is reliable...The logic doesn't follow here...

I'm not saying the guys gonna get hurt, but the risk is equalized and personally, the risk and value in the rangers acquiring a legit starter is much greater (less risk, more reward) for the rangers than the sox, who get gagne who has had 2 tommy john surgeries (that would be a lot) and hasn't been the phenom he once was since we all learned steroids was all over the MLB...

Luis Gonzalez was great...So was Sammy Sosa...they're both shells of their former selves...

Gabbard has pitched 8 more innings than Gagne this year. I guess that's why Kason is more proven?

I can understand being frustrated with people hatin' on your boy and mine McNabb, and the comparison kind of works. But Gabbard is a good starter, I wouldn't say "legit" yet, he's gotten 14, 11, 4 and 6 runs in each of his four wins, so the offense has certainly made his job easier.

I would not even say good yet. Look at guys like Paxton Crawford or Brian Rose (I'm going a few years back for these guys) for the Red Sox, they came up and had a few good starts and everyone was ready to call them the next great pitcher. Where are they now?

Sorry, i wasn't clear:

My point was, Teh rangers are giving up a guy who's most likely not gonna stay w/ them for a guy who has a credible shot at being a legit starter...that is to say, he could start in the MLB for a while...and pitch decently...

I mean a rotation of Millwood, Padilla, Gabbard (annnnndd, that's all the texas pitchers i could think of!) doesn't look bad on paper...its a start...

That is true. They do need all the starting pitching they can get. The funny thing is, even on paper that rotation is starting to look bad!

It's a good deal for both sides, I'm not debating that. But to say that Gabbard is "just as proven" as Gagne is ridiculous. Brandon McCarthy will be in Texas' rotation, too...don't know who else they have.

Kameron Loe is crying himself to sleep over the fact we forgot about him. Also, how much would Texas pay to have Chris Young back? What did they get from SD in that deal anyway?

My friends will attest...i called that one years ago...i was on the chris young train about 4 years ago when he was in texas...i claimed he was special...and he was decent then...but when san diego made the trade, i proclaimed, san diego has a the best 1-2 in the NL...and when Peavy lost it alittle last year, i was a little ...peaved? but now...wow... and the young trade...when i saw it, i said texas is dumb...they gave up young, adrian gonzalez and termel sledge (no big deal) for Akinori Otsuka (ok) and adam eaton (ouch!)...even if you look at it, getting eaton for young is absolutely terrible and is otsuka worth gonzalez, sledge and partial young?

Why do people still think Millwood is good? He was never a great pitcher to begin with, just solid. He has had 1 good year in the past 4, and that was in 2005. He has an ERA hovering just uner 6 this year.

I'm not sure how they screwed up...losing gabbard doesn't really hurt them, since they don't need him as a starter eventually...
