Red Sox Trade Arroyo to Reds for Pena

15
Vote

The Boston Red Sox traded starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo to the Cincinnati Reds today, receiving outfielder Wily Mo Pena in return. Arroyo took a paycut to stay in Boston but notably did not receive a no-trade clause in the deal, as part of Red Sox policy. Both he and Pena were rumored to be on the trade block for a number of months.

Good deal for the Red Sox. If Pena bats below Ortiz that will be a nice 3,4,5 combo.

You think? Pena's junk. .300 OBP. 100 K in 300 AB. And he'a 4th OF for them, behind Manny/Coco/Trot. Meanwhile, Arroyo is a decent back-of-the-rotation starter who can eat 170 IP if not more. And he was cheap. I honestly don't get this deal from the Red Sox stand point, unless they think Wily Mo is about to bust out.

Pena has showed that he has talent, but has never been given the oppurtunity to play fulltime. He's a free swinger, true, but could be awesome in that lineup. The Sox have too many starters anyway. 4.51 ERA last year . . .

I really like Pena and think he could be a great bat in that lineup but where is he going to get the ABs. Bottom line is that he is now a draftable player in my fantasy leagues.

We'll see. Pena's on the bubble, I'm not sure that he was worth Arroyo.

Arroyo saw a major drop in his strikeout rate last season, anything further and he may not remain so adept at keeping the ball in the park. A concen at Great American Ballpark. Pena is a strange pickup for Epstein, but he's clearly got power and is young. If he tailors his swing for Fenway good things could happen. Also gives them a real fill-in for the next time Manny pulls his shenanigans.

With pitching being thin, it's tough to trade it away for anything less than an unproven talent. However, I could see Pena putting up 40hr. He has the talent and he has the Green Moster to hit off of.

Sox traded Arroyo because they had too much starting pitching (at the moment) and a lack of outfield depth. Arroyo was their most marketable commodity and presented the best chance of getting back a player of real value. Nixon has probably past his prime, sits against lefties and is a free agent at the end of the season. If Pena can work on his plate discipline, hell be far more valuable than Arroyo over the next three years. Plus, he does not currently have cornrows, which is nice

I wonder how Arroyo feels about giving the Red Sox that hometown discount now. He's not an ace, but can go 200 innings. I wonder if Pena can pitch. Wells is 42 and Schilling and Wakefield are 39. Is Beckett's blister problems done? I can see this deal backfiring for the Sox.
