Red Sox Royally Spanked

In my years of watching sports, I never thought I would say these words. The Red Sox were swept by the Kansas City Royals. Coming from a Sox fan like myself, these are painful words to write. Not only did the Sox get swept by the freaking Royals, but that was after they lost 2 out of 3 to the freaking Devil Rays. What in the name of Bill Buckner is going on here?

Last week, everything was pretty fine and dandy for Boston. They had no less than 2 exhilirating late comebacks, including a walk-off 3 run homer by Big Papi against the Indians. Things were looking good, and they were starting to build a lead on the Yankees. Then, the next thing I know, Curt Schilling gives up 9 (9!) doubles and a home run in a single game to the Royals (the Royals!). For those keeping score, that's 10 extra base hits, and according to Elias Sports Bureau, the most extra base hits given up by any pitcher since 1969. And this is Curt Schilling! And these are the Royals!

Alright, hope isn't completely lost here. We still have a month and a half left in the season, and the Sox are only 3 games back of the Yanks, and 2 games back of the White Sox for the Wild Card. But this 6 game stretch against the Royals and D-Rays, albeit on the road, was supposed to be a break in the schedule, some gimme games to cushion their lead on the Yanks. Instead, here we are today. Un-freaking-believable.

Are Yankee fans grinning ear to ear right now? I'm guessing they are.
