In the first game of a three game set last in Chicago last night, the Red Sox squared off against the World Champions, and the team that had swept them out of the playoffs last season. The Sox started the game with some post-July 4th fireworks and got a two run home run by David Ortiz. The Sox would only be tied in this game briefly, and never trailed, adding 3 runs over 3 innings, all by sacrifice RBIs. Rookie Jon Lester was able to pitch six innings, giving up only two runs on hits. Lester showed al ot of poise in this game, when twice he got of bases loaded jams with no outs, allowing only one run each time. The Red Sox bullpen pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. The Red Sox also got homeruns in the ninth by Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp to put the game out of reach.
The Red Sox will send Josh Beckett to the hill to face Freddy Garcia. Beckett is 10-4 with an ERA over four. Beckett has been lights out at Fenway Park going 4-0 there, however the road is a little different, on road games Beckett is 6-4 with ERA over six runs per game.
The Red Sox were able to maintain their three game lead over the Yankees last night, and they also were able to increase it by one game over the Blue Jays, stretching that lead to six games.
