The Boston Red Sox started off their final home stand of the regular season with a two game sweep over the Oakland Athletics when they handed Oakland an 11-6 loss at Fenway Park.
Mike Lowell had a huge night, becoming the first Red Sox third baseman to record five RBI’s in one game. Dustin Pedroia had a big night as well, going 3 for 5 with a homerun. Manny Ramirez went 3 for 3 in his second game back from the oblique injury. Kevin Youkilis made his first start since being hit in the arm by a pitch and he picked up one hit.
Jon Lester made the start for the Sox and excited in the fourth inning after giving up a home run to Mike Piazza, and the Sox trailing 4-3. However Boston would make it up when they put two runs on the board in the fourth. The sea saw battle continued when Oakland put one run on the board in the fifth. Dustin Pedroia then broke the tie and put the Red Sox on top for good when he hit a lead off homer in the sixth inning. Mike Lowell then added a few runs and the Red Sox never looked back after they put four up in the sixth and two more runs up in seventh. The Oakland Athletics got one run back in the ninth off of Julian Tavarez but the comeback ended there.
The Red Sox welcome the Minnesota Twins to town for the final four games of the season, while the Oakland Athletics finish their season up with the playoff bound Los Angles Angels.
The Red Sox are two games away from clinching the AL East for the first time since 1995.
