Red Sox Ink Beckett to 3-Year Extension

11
Vote

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein signed hard-throwing right-hander Josh Beckett to a 3-year $30 million extension with a club option for a fourth which is based on appearances. This deal would keep Beckett in Boston until at least 2009 and likely makes him the staff ace in 2008 (if Curt Schilling follows through on his vow to retire after the 2007 season).

Although below perceived market value, Beckett (12-5, 4.78ERA) accepted the deal with fervor. "This is where I want to play," Beckett said moments after what was arguably his most dominant outing of the season (8 IP, 4 H, 0 ER). "I'm happy here. These are the greatest fans in the world".

Beckett, who is only 3 wins from his career best (15 in 2005), is motivated by the possibility of becoming the staff ace of a team as routinely competitve as the Red Sox.

In post-game interviews, both Epstein and manager Terry Francona expressed a degree of satisfaction in the deal, eager to have Beckett lead Boston's talented youngsters Papelbon, Jon Lester, Craig Hansen) into a new era of Red Sox lore.

This was a good move by the Sox - especially at that price.

Beckett has had his issues (injuries, blisters) over the years, but there's no doubt that this guy has what it takes to be a dominating pitcher. As a Sox fan, I love this move.

I'm not sure he will ever develop into a true #1; however, a good value considering the price for pitching. If the Sox go sign Barry Zito for 15-17 mil a season, I wonder if in a year or 2 Beckett doesn't come back and complain about the deal he signed, a la T.O. or Scotty Pippen.

I'm sure he will absolutely develop into a true number one, and that he will never complain about his deal.

I don't think beckett has show the consistency to earn even $10 million. Andy Benes had a lot of potential too.

He never did what Beckett did though.

Looking at it closer, this is a safety blanket move for both sides. Beckett earns more in 2007 then he would have perhaps + 5 mil. In return he gives up 2 years of free agency at lets guess 15 mil per season (-10 mil). So he nets -5 mil but he just guarenteed himself life on easy street and has plenty of money should he get injured or not live up to expectations. The if he is an ace he can go for the giant contract in 2010. Chad Tracy, Johny Peralta and Grady Sizemore have all signed similar deals.
