Red Sox Clinch Division and Home Field

by Smmonroe2

The Boston Red Sox clinched the AL East title on Friday and then followed it up on Saturday by clinching home field throughout the playoffs, and since the AL won the All-Star game if the Sox play in the World Series they will have home field there as well. On Friday night Dice-K Matsuzaka pitched eight strong innings to pick up his 15 win of his rookie season. While striking out 8 and giving up 6 hits and 2 runs. Jonathan Papelbon then closed out the game for his 37 save of the season. David Ortiz had the big bat in the 5-2 win, as he knocked his 35 homer and doubled. Mike Lowell had 2 RBI’s and J.D. Drew and Kevin Youkilis had the others. Minnesota pitcher Slowey gave up 4 runs on seven hits. The Baltimore Orioles then had a dramatic 9th inning comeback against the Yankees in which they scored 4 runs on Mariano Rivera and helped the Red Sox clinch the division. On Saturday the Sox had to take care of one more piece of business. A win gave them hold field advantage throughout the playoffs. So they rode Tim Wakefield to his 17th win as they capped off a comeback with a 6-4 win. JD Drew hit a 3-run homerun in the 7th to put his team on top. Mike Lowell also had a homerun, his coming in the 6th with nobody on base, giving him 120 RBI’s for the season. Hideki Okajima picked up the save and the Red Sox celebrated home field advantage. So what does all this mean? Well, it means that the Sox will play the LA Angels in the ALDS and host the first two games. If they get past the Angels they will host the first two games of the ALCS. The Sox wrap the season up Sunday night against the Twins and then will start the playoffs on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. from http://www.sportsbysam.blogspot.com

This good naturedness between Sox fans and Yankee fans just won't do. Looks like I'll have to antagonize. Yankees Suck!

I really don't mind the Yankees all that much...I have been hoping they would overtake the Red Sox all year. The 2004 WS aftermath killed my positive feelings for the Red Sox. Among other things, I hate the fact that every team's fans are now called Mets Nation or Cubs Nation or Devil Rays Nation. Sorry, I'll shut up now.

No it's ok, Tmil, and I agree. AND, because of this, fans go too far, and start going ballistic about how teams, like some of the Red Sox fans do. I just wanna watch some games, and root for my favorite team. What's so bad about that?

I would give you more plusses if I could for that. I don't hate the Phillies, even though they have been killing the Mets so badly of late. They scare the hell out of me, and I root against them, vehemently, but I realize they don't suck. Except Adam Eaton...he sucks.

I always root for the underdog, and I love it when everything is close. It all comes down to the final game, and I hope the Phils and Mets have to play a 163rd game cuz they have the same records. Read the article Back To Life and check out my comment. Tmil, thanks for the kind words. And yes, Adam Eaton DOES suck. lol

A Monday tiebreaker for the Mets and Phillies would be awesome. I'm hoping for it too, rather than winning the NL East outright. It would be fantastic, and honestly, if you can't get excited for that, you really shouldn't be a baseball fan. Tim Kurkjian, although he didn't really understand all the tiebreakers (Who does, other than Jayson Stark?), was almost as excited for this as he was for the 30-run game earlier in the year. It's awesome being a baseball fan.

Comment of the day right there. Just because of that, I want to find Tim Kurkjian's interview with the Orioles and Rangers game. LMAO! And yeah, I'm hoping for 163rd game to see who the better team is. I hate when a team is judged to be better than another because of games they play against sucky/good teams. Lay it out on the line.

Some would, but I don't think they'd appreciate it properly and leave it for football. So, in this scenario, baseball is Jennifer Aniston and football is Angelina Jolie. And we are all Brad Pitt.

It takes about 2 and a half hours for anything exciting to finally start happening.

Or so I'm told....

Another question for you guys: Who's going to pick the team they want to face in the ALDS: Red Sox or Indians? Or will they have to face each other in a one game playoff?

No, the team with the best record plays the wild card team provided they are not in the same division. The bonus that the team with the best record gets is the choice of playing the first round in 7 days or eight...basically setting your rotation as to whether you want to rely on two or three guys, or if you have a deeper rotation, to take the shorter to force the other team to use their less than stellar guys.

The Red Sox are damn lucky that they didn't suffer the same fate as the Mets did. Then again, look at 1978. The Yankees nearly caught them and if it wasn't for a few key losses in the last ten days, it would've happened again. Here's hoping the Yankees and Red Sox meet again in the ALCS and revenge is served for what happened in 2004.
