Red Sox Blog Plagiarized By a Local Radio Station

According to Wikipedia :

Plagiarism (from the Latin plagiare, "to kidnap") is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship of (or incorporating material from) someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one's own without adequate acknowledgment.

Why talk about plagiarism on my Red Sox blog? Well today I got this comment from Joseph, a reader, about one of my posts : [1]

While listening to Matty in the Morning this morning on Kiss 108, they were going down the list of at-bat songs for the Red Sox...and THAT list sounded and ran in the same order as this list...just a little congrats for "getting" on the radio...even though I never heard then give you a shout out... but here's to a great list October 24, 2007 4:09 PM

I thought "heh- that's pretty cool, wonder if it really was my list?" So I decided to go online and see if I could find a podcast or mention of the list anywhere. After 2 minutes of searching I got my answer. Mr. Matty in the Morning did, in fact, copy my list of Red Sox at-bat songs. Not only did he copy it, he didn't give me credit for compiling the list or bother to fix a grammar/spelling mistake I made!

Why do I know it's my list?

  1. I spent a long time putting this list together
  2. I searched online extensively and couldn't find a current list (although there was one on Boston.com from 2004) - and I work in SEO so I know how to use the Internet
  3. I don't know the name of the Creed song for Manny Delcarmen and I put a "?" instead of the song name, Matty's list says the same
  4. I mistakingly put a "?" after the name of Tim Wakefield's song, Matty's list says the same
  5. It's the same order as the songs I list
  6. On top of it all, I'm not even 100% sure my list is completely right but he has it listed song for song like I do! For example, I know Schilling no longer enters to "Welcome to the Jungle", as Gagne does - but I still have it there! Guess what? He does too!

Want to look for yourself? Here is my original post: Red Sox At Bat Songs Here is Matty's page (look halfway down on the right): Players entrance music

So here's what I'm asking, fans of SoxyLady. Please email Matty in the morning and Kiss108 FM and ask them to give me the credit I deserve. I would really appreciate it.

Matty: matty@kiss108.com Management: Management@kiss108.com

Now, enough of this nonsense - LET'S GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!

Come on it's Matty in the Morning if he didn't plagiarize he'd be out of the job. He is as talentless a DJ as there can possibly be. It is sad though, and I am kinda surprised he knows how to use the internet.

Hey, I believe you. But could you post the response from Matty here in the near future? Because this would've been worse if you had copyrighted this.

Yep, I'll definitely post any response I get. I realize the list was not copyrighted, but it's still directly copied off of my blog. I'm not trying to sue him or anything, I just want credit for my work!

About 20 years ago, I spent almost a year and a half researching and writing a baseball statistical analysis. This was before computers and programs and all the work had to be done by hand. I sent the article to a respected organization I was a member of, I received a response, thanks, we have enough for this year, maybe next. About six months later, I open up my newest issue of Baseball America, and what do I see? My article, word for word, under someone else's byline. Pissed? You betcha. Could I do anything about it? Nope. Why? Because I didn't copyright.

Moral of the story Soxy is this is a wikia site, publicly owned and maintained. Anything you put on here is fair game for anyone. All radio personalities plagarize, you don't honestly think they're smart, do you? Its not an expensive issue or a time consuming one, so if you want to copyright everything you do, knock yourself out.

We've all been there.

I actually never posted the article on this site - so there goes that. It was only posted on my blog. But thanks. Sorry for what you dealt with "20 years ago."

I know music copyright better, but it's very similar to print. Technically, when you write/create something of your own you legally own the right to copy it - that is technically what a copyright is. You can register it with a U.S. or international copyright for a nominal fee and some paperwork and you'll be covered fully - OR, If you can prove you did it first (dated and notarized copy; mailing yourself a copy of it and not opening it, etc.) you can sue the hell out of them. But when you put it on a blog or wikisite like this that requires you to free share, and agree to waivers (read the terms) - you waive that right.

Yeah, ESPN.con (yes, I spelled it right) has ripped several of us off too... and there's nothing stopping them other than discrediting them and calling them out for the uncreative frauds they are...

It's a shame he didn't at least mention the name of the site. If anything just to get your name out there, you deserve some credit. Imagine all the listeners who could run to your site

UPDATE:

They added a link to my site on their page and I got the following email:

Soxy Lady,

I do all the Matty in the Morning Show WebPages and would like to apologize for putting that list up with out giving you credit. I did the list and got side tracked and forgot to mention your blog. I have linked your site to the list so I hope this is better. Once again I apologize.

Sincerely, BC

I'm impressed with how quickly they handled the situation.
