Red Sox Advice: Accept the Wild Card and Sit Your Best Players

The New York Mets were the only team last year to win a series with the home field advantage. The Boston Red Sox shouldn’t worry about the division or home field and focus on the post-season.

The Sox have been in a dismal tailspin for the last couple of weeks:

  • Curt Schilling is 2-4 since he returned from the disabled list
  • Hideki Okajima has given up 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings this month (Francona is sitting him)
  • Tim Wakefield went from unhittable at the end of August to giving up 17 runs in three starts in September
  • Dice-K has matched Wakefield with 17 runs given up in September.
  • Manny Ramirez is supposedly still hurt
  • Big Papi definitely could use some rest
  • Jason Varitek is doing his usual August-September exhaustion slide
  • Coco Crisp missed last night’s game
  • Kevin Youkilis is still recovering from Wang hitting him last week

I have found the winning scenario for the Red Sox to be competitive in the post-season.

  • Setup your starting pitchers this week to allow the post-season rotation to be ideal
  • Starting pitchers will only pitch five innings or 80 pitches
  • Give Manny, Tek, Ortiz and Youkilis 10 more at-bats for the season
  • Give Jonathan Papelbon and the rest of the bullpen two more appearances in the next week.
  • Eric Gagne will pitch every single remaining inning of the season.
This scenario will freshen up the team and get them ready to compete in the post-season.

Please tell me Red Sox fans how the Sox should play these last 9 games of the season.

Chris

As a Red Sox fan, I fully endorse this notion; even though the idea of denying the Yanks the AL East pennant that they've had a choke-hold on since 95 is very tempting.

a pennant is given to the winner of each League, divisional titles only result in banners.

if Gagne pitches every other inning this year, couldn't one deem it possible that the Sox lose out and someone steals the wild card?

As a long time fan of the game - I will give you free advice - the worst thing you can do is rest your guys before going into the playoffs. It's a game of timing, You NEED to be sharp...

Lots of teams that had big leads and cruised into the playoffs go COLD in October...

Teams that fight through to the end STAY hot (look at last year for a perfect example)

Of course, IF you rest your guys now, then the Rays can lock up 4th place! Who am I kidding? It won't matter if you rest your players!

Asslick wants to play second base!

I doubt he could make the throw to first. But if he played first base, the other fielders wouldn't even need to throw it to him - he'd just suck so much the ball would just come right to him!

First base might be a good position for the douche. All he would need to do is aim his rear to the fielder and let nature take its course on "receiving" the baseball. Isn't that how he got the "big break" into show buiz anyways?

He's definitely more of a catcher than a pitcher...

I dunno which is scarier - drunken out of control Eagles fans or drunken out of control Phillies fans?

Eagles fans... no question. But Phillies fans hold longer grudges. Mike Schmidt will never eat another un-spat upon cheesesteak in Philly. If Gene Mauch was still alive, they'd probably try to kill him. Von Hayes will never come out of hiding either!

TYhat was such a fun year to live in Philly! This is what people outside of Philly at the time fail to comprehend. It wasn't his fault. He did that kind of stuff all year and if it wasn't for Mitch, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THERE TO BEGIN WITH!

Chew on this - The Braves (and the Giants) were better teams. It was the last year of 2 divsions and the Phils wouldn't have been the wild card under the current set-up...

Another thing - It was GAME 6... even if the Phils win, they still had to win the next one too...

If you want to blame him for anything, blame him for losing game 4, not game 6...

Backing into the playoffs like you suggest is definitely not the way to get yourself ready for the second season. Ask the Dallas Mavericks how that worked for them.

I say that you set-up your rotation, but 10 at-bats for David Ortiz? Where are you getting this number? I can see giving him a day off or maybe two days off, but limiting him to 10 at-bats? That's like 2 games?
