Born on April 28, 1902 in Columbia, Tennessee, Red Lucas (Charles Fred Lucas) played for the New York Giants, Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 16 year career. Lucas broke into the bigs on April 19, 1923 with the New York Giants, and put up a 5.16 ERA in 83.2 innings pitched in 1924, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Red Lucas's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1929, when he posted a 3.60 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 72 batters. However, others believe that it was 1936, when he posted a 3.18 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 53 batters.
