Born on August 2, 1882 in Warren, Ohio, Red Ames (Leon Kessling Ames) played for the New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his 17 year career. Ames broke into the bigs on September 14, 1903 with the New York Giants, and put up a 2.27 ERA in 115 innings pitched in 1904, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Red Ames's best season was 1905, when he posted a 2.74 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 198 batters.
