Reconstructing the Yankees

This is probably the first time in recent history I have looked forward to the Yankees offseason, as the product on the field has been horrid, and I really tire of analysts who have to tell the viewers that the Yankees are "still dangerous". If they mean dangerous like eating that 4 day old Chinese food in the back of your fridge, then yes. If they mean they can steal your girlfriend and send you into a dark drinking depression dangerous, that would be a check in the "no" box. This team lacks passion, energy, baseball smarts, defense, intangibles and consistency, and I would go as far to say that's just the tip of the iceberg. Here is what the Yankees should do this offseason...

1. Upgrade the outfield defense

This could be done by signing these two players, Eric Byrnes and Ichiro. They could then shift Melky Cabrera to left field, move Ichiro back to right and put Byrnes in center. With a pitching staff that allows alot of flyballs, they could make up alot of ground. The Yankees pitchers haven't always been hit hard this year, but they have been hit enough to where I can tell you the outfield defense of Matsui and Abreu is not championship caliber. Abreu runs like he has had untreated hemmoroids dating back to his Philadelphia days, and Matsui is just missing something. Improving the outfield defense not only makes your team stronger, it helps the mentality of a pitching staff that constantly tries to nibble at corners because they are terrified something could get hit into the outfield. Yes, Torri Hunter and Andruw Jones would also upgrade the defense, but Ichiro will be a better value, will generate more Japanese interest and set-up Red Sox-Yankees series in which Matsuzaka pitches against Matsui and Ichiro to be a Japanese phenomenon.

2. Move Hideki Matsui to first base

An offseason of working with Don Mattingly should help this along nicely. Matsui is going to provide 20 homers, 100 rbi's and a .280 average pretty much every year. His offense and consistency makes him a better choice at first than Johnny Damon, and I think he is a safer bet.

3. Make Damon the full-time DH

It's pretty obvious the years of reckless outfield abandon are taking their toll. This lineup doesn't work when he is not in it, but the outfield's ability to throw out runners is hurt significantly when he plays out there. If Damon batted third in a lineup behind Ichiro and Jeter, the hit and run possibilities are through the roof. Someone needs to show Brian Cashman DVD's of the Yankee teams from 1996 to 2001, because they were all built around steady hitters(Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez), not big boppers(Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield etc.). They could manufacture runs and could win one run games, which is something this year's Yankees can't do.

4. Hire Joe Girardi

I love Joe Torre as much as the next guy, but it's time. Girardi is in house (works for YES), is a former Yankee, and did alot with a Florida team last year that was supposed to lose 100 games. He'll bring a National League style to this team, which worked well when they first brought Torre in, and with a lineup full of gap hitters and speed, they could cause all sorts of problems for teams out there.

5. Re-Sign Jorge Posada, get a dependable backup catcher

Posada is having a career year this year, but I worry that he will get signed to a big deal and then peter out. Sign him for no more than three years, and try and get a guy like Brian Schneider, Jose Molina, or Gregg Zaun to be Mussina and Phil Hughes personal catchers. This gives Posada two days off a week and gives the Yankees a switch hitting pinch hit option in those games. Keeping Posada fresh is extremely important. Will Nieves just isn't cutting it.

6. Let A-Rod go, sign Pedro Feliz to play third

Will Feliz replace Rodriguez completely? Of course not. Remember though, the Yankees signed a guy by the name of Scott Brosius to replace Wade Boggs and that worked out pretty well. This allows A-Rod to go to the west coast, where he will be much happier, and for the Yankees to finally be able to not have to listen about A-Rod this and A-Rod that.

I think those 6 moves, along with smart bullpen management (ie not using Scott Proctor every day) and good use of their farm system, get the Yankees back atop the AL East, and keep them their for awhile. Heck it might even get them title number 27. This much however, is clear, there is a lot of work to do, and it should start now....

Wait, you mean the Yankees don't send you into a "dark drinking depression?"

He means, let A-Rod opt out if he wants, don't restructure his contract and pay him 30 mil a year.

Right now A-Rod has a clause in his contract that he must make the most in baseball in any given year...currently he was scheduled to make around 23 mil, but Giambi was making 25...so he was upped to 26 i believe...something along those lines...

Anyways, If I were Double Play-Rod, I would go to the yankees and give them this..."I'm opting out at the end of the year if you don't extend my contact by the time FA starts...I want essentially 25 mil a year for the rest of my foreseeable career...give me that, and I'll stay..."

Otherwise, it makes business sense to Double play-rod to opt out and go somewhere where he can sign a 6-8 year deal giving him approx 18-25 mil a year instead of risking making 25 mil for the next 2 and perhaps signing for less...in the end he might make a few mil less by opting out (suggeting he might still get a 25 mil a year contract after his deal runs out)...but for the security involved in such a situation...it makes sense

"Girardi is in house (works for YES)" - I mean, i know the yankees own it, but its hardly in house...wouldn't this be the equivilent of the red sox calling in Eckersly to close out a game or 2...(or moving pedroia to third and letting Remy play 2nd...)

No, it would be the same as the Sawx asking Eck to be a pitching coach. If Girardi doesn't wind up being the manager, I'll be surprised. Of course, if he's smart, he doesn't take it.

No it wouldn't, Eck is an announcer. Girardi was the National League Manager of the Year last year, big difference...

BW i was actually supporting your point. My point was that JuT's analogy was wrong. Girardi IS already on their payroll. And as Eck and Girardi are both working for the broadcast arms, my analogy was more correct. And Girardi is a great coach. He deserves a good job. I just think no one wants to be the coach after Torre.

first of all, it was a joke...sorry it blew...

Secondly Eck was a former Cy Young winnner, Rollaids relief man and hall of famer...he is also very well qualified to know...pitching things...

Thirdly...Eck is on the sox payroll...as an analyst...

Sorry that one blew over...but pop a few vidirol and relax...

This is a great article. I agree with pretty much every point you made. I would prefer Hunter over Ichiro, but Ichiro is still awesome. As for Girardi, as much as I would like this to happen, not gonna happen. Mattingly is going to take over and if he doesn't he's gonna be one pissed off guy who will probably quit if he doesn't takeover Torre's spot. Great stuff!

It's not like I said cut him. Do you for one freaking second believe A-Rod is going to re-up in New York? It's not like he's under contract for 5 more years, he can opt-out at the end of this year! IT IS HIS OPTION!!! My point is taking on big money superstars has not worked for the Yankees, and taking that 25 million bucks they would spend on A-Rod they could, gee, I don't know, get a bullpen, a third baseman, and a utility infielder not named Miguel Cairo. It's not up to the Yankees to bring A-Rod back, it's up to A-Rod...

BWell-- Your thought process doesn't have the faintest bit of intellectual analysis. This is your reasoning?:

The Yankees had expensive players. The Yankees did not win the World Series. Ere go, the Yankees did not win the World Series because they had expensive players. So it naturally follows that the Yankees must rid themselves of all expensive players, then they'll win the World Series??

What about the Red Sox who won the World Series with the 2nd highest payroll in baseball? Or the Oakland A's who never won anything, but consistently had the lower paying teams in the country? The exceptions to your thinking are legion. The only thing you are proposing is making the team worse, and not better. Anyone who took what you wrote even somewhat seriously is now dumber because of it.

Seriously, read some stuff by Bill James, Rob Neyer, or the gents at the Sons of Sam Horn. It'll be like taking the Red Pill in the Matrix, or getting the anti-retard medicine in Flowers for Algernon. You'll laugh at yourself for even suggesting such lunacy.

Your suggestion of letting A-Rod go is basically a plan to make the team worse. If you think that it's a good idea to let the American League MVP leave, then the only thing you've shown is how little you know about anything even remotely related to baseball. I'll be on the lookout for your name next time so that I can avoid your articles completely.

Nice article, even though I am not totally sure why hemorrhoids is wikied. I think the two biggest things the Yankees need to do this year are get rid of Abreu (he helped spark the team last year but has been a drag this year) and honestly address the bullpen (as well as whoever is the manager's use of said bullpen).

The Yankees do not need fixing. They've scored 60 more runs than they've allowed. They should be 43-32, but they've been unlucky. If their luck balances out in the second half, they'll be in contention for the WC. Your Yankees team would score like 100 fewer runs next year, and their pitching wouldn't really be any better. And why does everybody consider Joe Girardi such a great manager? His lifetime record is below .500. The Marlins had good young players last year, and when they got time to play because other people got traded away, they did well. Their winning percentage this year is basically the same as it was last year. Managers overall make very little difference on a team's performance, but there's no reason to believe Joe Girardi would help them.

Drives me crazy when Red Sox or Mets fans start writing articles about how to improve the Yankees. Suggestions which are too stupid to help your own team are all of a sudden good enough to help the Yankees?
