Reason to believe in the Fightin' Phils?

by user Jason Mish

As a Philadelphian, you can never be too excited about any team. But as a Philadelphia Phillies fan there are some reasons to be optimistic.

Cole Hamels is the obvious one. The lefty has showed tremendous stuff with a mid 90's fastball and a nasty changeup, comparible to the gifted Johan Santana. With Ryan Howard starting to come around and Chase Utley producing his usual underrated stats, I as a Phillies fan am optimistic about the playoffs this season.

The key to winning the NL East in my opinion comes down to Pedro. The Mets have no starting pitching and if Pedro comes back healthy it could turn the tables on the NL East. Never count out the Braves who are 3-7 in their last 10 but thats without Chipper Jones, who should be coming back soon.

The question down the stretch will be if the Phils can count on the 44 year old Jamie Moyer and the highly overpaid Adam Eaton, who has come around recently. In my mind, the questionable decision of moving Brett Myers to the closer role could be pivotal to the success of the Fightins'.

Predicted the Phillies would take this division beginning of the year. They were making me look bad at first but now they're rolling. Lot of talent on this team and don't forget the bullpen blew at least 6 games earlier this year. Drafted Hamels this year and they blew 2 or 3 games for him alone. http://www.a...ictions.html

they had their swoon early. Phils won again today, swept the ChiSox. Grand slam for Rowand. I have the Phils as the wild card this year, and I see no reason to change my mind.

"The Mets have no starting pitching"

The Mets lead the Sillies in Team ERA, Shutouts, Quality starts, and BAA. Just because you didn't expect the starters to do this well doesn't mean they have no starters. Meanwhile, the Phils have given up a league worst 303 ERs.

Btw, hows Garcia's arm?

I think you would have to be crazy to prefer the Phailures starting pitching to that of the Mets. While Hamels is the best pitcher on either team, I don't think anyone is salivating over a rotation that includes Adam Eaton, Jamie Moyer, Jon Lieber and Kyle Kendrick. The two guys you left off your list are Jimmy Rollins and Aaron Rowand who are both playing great ball right now.

Rollins just reappared in june...Rowand has cooled since his hot start, but both have been commendable during their cold phases...

Hmmm, Glavine, Maine, Hernandez, Perez, Sosa...

Well, here's my thought...at the beginnning of the season, it was easily the phils...with the thinking that you had hamels, myers and garcia at the top with moyer and eaton as the 4 & 5...which is waaaaayy better than what the mets had going in...

Now we're in mid june and things look different...myers is in the pen, garcia is done, hamels is pitching very well and glavine just got his butt kicked...bad...to say either team is happy with their rotation as is, would be a lie, but to say it's crazy to take the phils rotation over the mets is also false...they're coming down to earth (namely perez and hernandez), but starting 3 of glavine, martinez and maine (if all healthy and effective) is better...

You're call here...i'd call it a push right now...mets starters have gone down while the phils have picked it up...

What? El Duque and Sosa have been unhittable. Maine has been a tough luck loser. He gives up 3 runs a game. If the Mets score 4, Maine has a decent chance of winning the game. Perez is inconsistent, but when he is on he is as good as Hamels, and when he is off he is as good as the Phillies second starter. The bottom line is that the Phailures have an ace and 4 guys who are 5th starters. That is not an impressive rotation. The Mets have an entire rotation of 2nd, 3rd and 4th starters with no true ace. I would take the Mets rotation over the Phailures every day of the week (except the days Hamels is pitching)

you're kidding right?

If you're suggesting you're gonna count on either for the rest of the season, you're crazy...those guys are 4s or 5s at best...

Lieber has a 3.72 ERA, if that's a 5th starter than he's a ridiculous 5th starter...Eaton is starting to put it together with a 1.38 ERA in his last 2 starts...

But who am I to tell you...go ahead, take the mets...i try to give credit where credit is due and give you a honest opinion...

Things are coming back to earth for the mets rotation...

Don't worry, the Phils get the Tigers next. The pattern has to be to look great in 1 series and look like a JV high school team in the next. This means the Tigers are going to school the Phils this weekend. Hide the women and children, the upcoming site is not going to be pretty....

Don't compare the Phillies to the Mets, they're obviously a better team. Compare them to the rest of the NL. Phillies should be a lock for the wild card and with a few breaks (2004 Red Sox) or some luck (2006 Cardinals) can win the whole thing. Stop laughing. I'm serious.

Give the Phillies starters a break. They pitch in a bandbox while the Mets starters pitch in a Great pitchers park. The Mets starters should average close to 1 full run less than the Phillies given the parks.

Stupid me. I thought Wins and Loses were all that should matter, not some guy's individual ERA so he can rape a team come contract time.

I am a Braves fan but don't hate the Mets or Phillies. I suffered through the 1977 season when Braves lost 101 games and in 1988 when they lost 106 games so was already on the bandwagon when they started winning. Braves rotation is weak after Smoltz and Hudson so our slogan should be " Smoltz and Hudson and pray for 3 days of rain".

James has been losing a lot recently. If Smoltz or Hudson don't win when they pitch they are in trouble. Davies got hit hard the night before. Hope the Phillies can get Myers back soon. If the Braves can't win it this year would like to see the Phillies win.
