The Texas Rangers set a new American League record in the first game of a doubleheader with the Orioles this afternoon, lighting up the O's pitching staff for THIRTY runs. They went on to win by a score of 30 to 3. Daniel Cabrera was solid for the first three innings, and carried a 3-0 lead to the fourth.
The Rangers batted around in the fourth, scoring two runs on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia single, and the other three on a homer by Ramon Vazquez. They proceeded to drive Cabrera from the game in the sixth before he recorded an out. Texas went on to score 9 in the sixth, 10 in the eighth, and six more in the ninth. After a perfect seventh, Rob Bell gave up seven straight base runners, four hits and three walks before being "relieved" by Paul Shuey. Shuey was shelled for nine runs on 7 hits, three walks and five strikeouts in the two innings.
The eight and nine hitters in the Rangers lineup, Saltalamacchia and Vazquez, were each 4 for 6 and drove in seven runs. Saltalamacchia scored five runs, Vazquez four, and each homered twice. The Rangers totaled six homers, the other two grand slams by Travis Metcalf and Marlon Byrd, two doubles, and 21 singles, plus eight walks. Every starter had at least two hits, and Metcalf was 1 for 1 with that slam, and drew a walk in his two appearances after coming in.
Kason Gabbard (6-1) pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits to get the win.
