[edit] Biography
Randy Newsom began his professional career after signing as an undrafted free agent with the Boston Red Sox in June 2004 out of Tufts University. Two years later, Newsom was traded in the deal which sent Coco Crisp to the Red Sox and Andy Marte to the Cleveland Indians.
In his first year in the Cleveland organization, Newsom earned MVP honors in the Carolina League Championships Series. In 2007, his second year, Newsom put up a 1.50 ERA in high A-ball, and was promoted to the AA Akron Aeros, earning All-Star honors.
Newsom is a submariner whit good control. He will not overpower batters -- his fastball is in the low 80s -- but his pitches have a natural sink. He also throws a changeup, slider, and a rarely-used four-seam fastball. His arm angle and pitch selection lead him to induce a lot of ground balls and keeps homers to a minimum. If he maintains a low walk rate and can keep inducing grounders, Newsom has an outside chance at a cup of coffee with the Cleveland Indians in 2008.
Newsom's claim to fame, however, is due to his entrepreneurial spirit. In January of 2008, Newsom became the first ever minor league baseball player to sell an equity interest in his future Major League earnings, offering 2,500 shares (equaling 4% of his future MLB worth) at $20 each via his company, Real Sports Investments.
Newsom also owns a business which sells custom embroidered items online, called Lacers.
