Random Thoughts and Brutal Honesty VII

After one of the best playoff games in the history of mankind and with a historic Super Bowl to come, it's time to be brutally honest.
- Anybody that watched the AFC Championship game on Sunday {46 million +} and didn't jump off their respective couches to get at least a little animated needs to be checked out. Manning wiped the "big game choke artist" label away for good in one of the greatest 2nd half performances ever. Hopefully, every household recorded this game so that it can be shown to future football players 20 years down the line for inspiration or sheer knowledge of the game itself. But be sure to stop the recording at the Solomon Wilcots interview with Bill Belichick after the game. Kids need to be shown examples of class and integrity, not the painfully obvious lack of sportsmanship shown by Belichick after the game. I respect Bill Belichick as a head coach and his obvious dedication to preparing for games as well as getting his players to think less of individual stats and more about the W. But the poor sportsmanship that he showed during the Pats home loss to the Jets and then again after an instant classic on Sunday proves that he needs a lesson or two in class. Preferably from Tony Dungy.
History will be made as we are guaranteed to have the first African-American Super Bowl winning head coach. It's interesting that both Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith are carbon copies of one another. They're men of faith and character and have a calming presence that wipes away panic at any circumstance. There was little sense of panic or frustration during halftime trailing 21-6 by Dungy. And his adjustments to his Cover 2 defense showed his strength in taking all things in stride. Lovie Smith took the erratic play of Grossman and the pending QB controversy in stride and kept his team focused. It's fitting that Tony Dungy's staff in Tampa Bay consisted not only of Lovie Smith but of Herman Edwards and Mike Tomlin, the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is a great moment in the history of sports. A unique and significant moment. Of course, there are still reports that NFL teams are getting around the minority rule by Dan Rooney. Hopefully, we will get past the minority rule and judge every coach by credentials as opposed to race. But the NCAA has to be feeling like manure right now. Without a minority rule, they only have 6 African-American coaches out of 119 Division 1-A teams.
There's a new player in men's tennis. Fernando Gonzalez. Remember the name. After beating James Blake and then Rafael Nadal {in straight sets} in consecutive matches at the Aussie Open. Fernando Gonzalez has people talking. He takes on Tommy Haas in the semis.
Another week, Another Bengals player behind bars. This time it's cornerback Jonathan Joseph for marijuana possession. Team veterans have had enough, especially Carson Palmer who even wondered if they'll have any fans left if this grows to 10. It's gotten to the point in which players only shake their head and move on. Marvin Lewis and the Bengals have seriously got to take a serious look at who they are bringing in. It seemed that the Bengals were getting along well in the locker room on the surface. They faded down the stretch, so it's pretty obvious what affected their play.
Why are the New York Mets holding Willie Randolph hostage on his contract negotiations? They've paid Tom Glavine, Guillermo Mota and Endy Chavez. What gives?? Are the Mets punishing Randolph for losing Game 7 of the NLCS at home? Give this guy what he rightfully deserves!!!
