Ramirez No Charlie Hustle

Ramirez No Charlie Hustle

Manny Ramirez will never have to worry about being called Charlie Hustle. He proved it once again last night in the Red Sox's 7-1 win over the Indians. When David Ortiz scores from first on what should have been a double for Ramirez and Ramirez only gets as far as first base something is dreadfully wrong with that picture.

If Ramirez even thinks a ball is going out of the park he is going to take his time leaving home plate. When a ball is hit that is questionable a player needs to run full speed till an umpire signals a home run but Manny doesn't believe in running full speed unless he wants to run full speed. Earlier this year he was admiring what he thought was a home run and barely made it into second base when the ball stayed in the park.

Am not saying Ramirez is not a good player but he could be an even better player if he hustles like his teammates do. If Ortiz can run from first to home with his injuries then the least Ramirez can do is at least make it to second base.

Beckett-Lofton Confrontation

When Kenny Lofton laid his bat down on what he thought was ball four he was not showing up Josh Beckett but showing up the home plate umpire. Beckett though took it personally and apparently was mouthing off to Lofton and continued to mouth off to Lofton. The way Beckett was pitching he didn't need to worry about small stuff like that. Plus he did get Lofton to fly out so that should have been the end of it but he continued to berate Lofton and eventually Lofton had enough of it and said something to Beckett on his way to the dugout. In my book Beckett started the whole situation. I have not seen a pitcher react to a batter laying his bat down thinking it was ball four the way Beckett did last night.

Momentum Swinging Back to Red Sox

Last night, you could feel the momentum swinging back for the Red Sox. When a team scores their only run on a double play ball, they have had a bad night and that is precisely how the Indians scored their only run of the night. The Indians, for the second time in the series, could not solve the brilliant pitching of Beckett. C.C. Sabathia pitched better than last time, but still gave up 4 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings and his LCS ERA stands at 10.45 while Beckett struck out 11 batters in winning his third game of the postseason without a loss and showed again why he is the best pitcher in baseball. His postseason ERA this season is 1.17 and he has struck out 26 in 23 innings while allowing 13 hits and has walked only one batter.

With the two teams returning to Boston and Curt Schilling on the hill against Fausto Carmona on Saturday night a Red Sox win will even the series and give fans something we haven't seen in awhile a seven game LCS series. Since the Indians scored 7 runs in the 11th inning the momentum had shifted to the Indians but now I think with the Red Sox returning home they once again in the driver's seat and could be on their way to their second LCS championship in the last four years. But all that is in the hands of Carmona and Schilling since the Indians still do not have to win on Saturday night but they better win if they want to return to World Series for first time since 1995 and 1997.

The Red Sox have the top three hitters in either league during the LCS with Ramirez hitting .471, Kevin Youkilis hitting .421 and David Ortiz hitting .400. The next closest hitter to those three hitters is Brad Hawpe hitting .333.

The Red Sox are still getting no production from Coco Crisp Julio Lugo, and Jason Varitek, as they are hitting .143, .167, and .211 respectfully. Despite his average, Varitek has produced some offense for the Red Sox, as he has hit a home run and has drove in 4 runs. Crisp, Lugo, and Varitek, altogether, combine for a 10 for 58 LCS.

The worst hitters for the Indians are Travis Hafner and Franklin Gutierrez, who are 5 for 34 in the LCS with Hafner hitting .158 and Gutierrez hitting .133.

Note: Am leaving for a short trip to Louisiana today so won't be making any posts till Wednesday the day the World Series opens.

Even if Ramirez runs that ball out, nothing changes; there were two outs and Lowell struck out after him to end the inning.

I think people are making something out of nothing here...

Beckett and Lofton just don't like each other from an event in their NL days.

Anyone else think Red Light Curt is going to get rocked in Game 6? I hope he does so we can stop hearing about his red-markered sock already...

Speaking of Charlie Hustle - I'll bet a lot of people have said "That's just Pete being Pete" through the years

ESPN is making many people think he's gonna win.

"Last time he pitched a game 6 in the ALCS was when he wore that bloody sock."

That is irrelevant. Just drop it. OK, the bloody sock issue was definitely heroic, and I thank Schilling for his heart and soul for the game, but I agree with Manny when I say that this is being talked about too much.

I DO disagree with him on the fact that I want the Red Sox to win, not to lose. Schilling doesn't have to win though. ;)

Oh, and about your second comment, Manny: Nah, that wasn't said a lot, unless he was in Vegas.

You don't think the sock was really bloody, do you Romie?

It was a sock he had when he was 10 years old. It's a good luck charm for playoff comebacks.

The main thing to me about Ramirez is that youth today think it is cool not to run out balls and hustle. Didn't know about the Beckett-Lofton problems in NL so that may have just been a carryover from that event. I don't expect everyone to hustle like Pete Rose but they could at least run out the balls to first base. Some players run so slow to first base they could still be out if the first baseman drops the ball and picks it back up in time to get them out.

Yep, they faced each other when Beckett was playing for the Marlins, and Lofton was on the Phillies. They had some sort of confrontation. To be honest, I think they're just being big babies about the situation, no offense to either one of them because I respect them both for what they do. BUT, why b**** about something that you could just shake off. Be men, not little kids. Remember, you are setting an example for all of your peers.

Running full speed to first on a walk like Rose did was really a waste of energy but if it worked for him guess it is OK.

he took second on a lot of ball four/wild pitches or when they weren't watching him closely. Or maybe he just thought there was a bag of coke at first waiting for him?

He had this voice in his head saying, "C'mon, you lil' sissy. What? You can't hustle. Move your @$$."

Charlie Hustled his way to the tables, though. He used running to first on a walk to keep in shape for his little jogs to the betting windows.

Agree with Romiezzo that Beckett and Lofton need to concentrate on the playoffs and put personal differences aside. Don't think Lofton meant anything against Beckett when he put the bat down...he just honestly thought it was ball four. If anyone should be mad it should be the umpire who was the one being shown up.

Nah, just kidding, but yeah, Niteowl hit the nail right in the head. CONCENTRATION. They're not concentrating on the game itself, which could in turn ruin their performance.

So Rose had a reason for his hustling to first on a walk...makes sense he would want to be able to advance to second on ball four when he could.

Anything can happen in baseball. Another reason might be if there's a called strike 3 and he doesn't swing and the catcher misses the ball.

Very true...you can't assume anything in baseball...why it is best to hustle..it never hurts to hustle but it can hurt to not hustle.

It is not like Beckett hit Lofton in the head or was throwing at him. Beckett got the called strike so plus got Lofton to fly out so he won the confrontation in my book without it needing to go any further.

The whole thing is ridiculous, on both of their parts. Why would either exchange words. To whomever started it, STFU; to whomever didn't start it, ignore him and don't add salt to the wound.

Here's what I know, Ramirez has made a career out of being a space case. So he loafed on what should have been a double. Who cares. It didn't change things for either team. Some players have "styles" and some are just nutjobs. Ramirez is a nutjob. While he engages in sensational behavior, nothing he does is surprising.

I haven't seen a pitcher get angry at a hitter for laying a bat down since Josh Beckett got angry at Kenny Lofton in 2005, for laying his bat down. Beckett was on the Marlins, Lofton was on the Phillies.

Lofton lays his bat down at home plate when he walks, or thinks he walks. He also knows that Beckett doesn't like this. Lofton is a smart, clever veteran who will do anything to get an edge in a game. He tried to get under Beckett's skin. Beckett yelled at him. So Lofton provoked him further, yelling all the way up the baseline. Then Lofton seemed to begin to go after Beckett. Of course, Lofton timed his run perfectly with that of the benches clearing and the umpires breaking it up.

I don't know how you can exclusively blame Beckett for that. Lofton knew what he was doing, and he antagonized the whole way up the first baseline. It's funny that you criticise Manny for not running hard, how hard was Kenny running as he berated Beckett?

Everyone makes a big deal out of Manny's antics... he is one of the most studious hitters in history... just look at well he knows the strike-zone and how his swing is consistant... he is a marvelous hitter, and who cares how hard it looks like he is playing, he is still a hard worker...

If Manny had the hustle that Pete Rose had, he'd be the best baseball player ever. He's the blonde bimbo of baseball. No brains, giggles at everything, but goddamn what a rack! Glad he's on my team, or I'd be hating his guts, but now I understand Manny, kinda.
