Raising Arizona- The Impact of Ken Whisenhunt

Let's talk about the new coach in Arizona:

The Arizona Cardinals have been considered a potential contender each off-season over the last few years. However, for some reason the team just continues to pump out sub-par seasons. While nobody can question the talent that exists on this team, somehow they just can't seem to win football games. Dennis Green is in my opinion a very good coach, but you can't argue that his tenure with the Cards was a bit of a disappointment. So in steps Ken Whisenhunt, former Offensive Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whisenhunt took over the Steelers offense in 2004, which was also Ben Roethlisberger's rookie season. So first of all, this bodes well for second year Cardinals QB Matt Leinart. Leinart showed a great deal of promise last season, and will likely continue to improve. With Whisenhunt coaching, Leinart can be sure that he won't be expected to carry the team on his back. Whisenhunt brings an old-school mentality to the game, which is to run the football and to play tough defense. Instead of being asked to constantly air it out, Leinart will likely be asked to simply control the clock, make some clutch first downs, and perform the play-action (which incidentally, Leinart is pretty darn good at). This will alleviate some of the pressure off the second year QB and will help him to grow as a player and as a leader. So the first major impact that the new coach will have is on the development of his players. Bringing his hard-nosed offensive system to the organization will likely be good for the entire offense. It will also help maximize Anquan Boldin. Boldin thrives on making tough catches and then running with it. He's a strong WR who's not afraid to go over the middle. Whisenhunt will also help to perfect Boldin's blocking skills which will help on screens and in the running game. Boldin (barring injury) will basically be the Hines Ward of the Cardinals offense, and he has the skill-sets to thrive in that role. The second thing that Whisenhunt does for the Cardinals, is bring team unity and cohesion. I've heard that when the coach arrived, he sat down with some of the veterans and tried to determine what some of the biggest issues are on the team. Apparently, it was identified that members of the team, in spite of their immense talent, do not know how to work together and lack cohesiveness. This is an important aspect in football, which some refer to as "the ultimate team sport." In no place is this more important than along the offensive line, where five teammates must unite to form a wall in front of the backfield and the pocket. Not coincidentally, the offensive line has been arguably the Cardinals' biggest flaw for a long time. Whisenhunt aims to fix this problem, and I've heard that he's spent a lot of the off-season organizing team-building activities and promoting unity with the entire team... offensive line included. I believe that because of these two things, system and unity, Whisenhunt has a great chance of getting the Cardinals to finally live up to their talent base.

Additionally, Whisenhunt brought with him Steelers offensive line/assistant head coach Russ Grimm, and gave him the same job with the Cardinals. Grimm is a large reason why the Steelers have had such a good offensive line and running game, and he is likely to have a huge impact on improving the Cardinals' offense. Coupled with the first round pick of OT Levi Brown from Penn State (number five overall in the 2007 draft), Edgerrin James should have something to smile about. I figure that Grimm's presence, Leinart's progression, and Whisenhunt's system and coaching style should have James back on the fast track to over 1,300 yards rushing.

Good talking NFL!

I don't necessarily agree or disagree with whether or not the Cards will make the playoffs. I haven't done my projections yet. Preliminarily, I think they'll end up right around .500 this season though. The NFC West will be very competitive this year. The Rams look pretty good, and the 49ers are getting better. The Hawks still have the edge to win the division, but I'm not sold on it.

I do think that Cards are headed in the right direction though. I think their line and their running game will be greatly improved. I also think they have some unknown guys on defense who are developing nicely (i.e. Eric Green, Gerald Hayes). We'll see what actually happens, and I'll be posting my actual predictions and full-team analysis' as the regular season gets closer. Thanks for the comment!

I don't think Edgerrin James is the solution to their running game. They need to consider that position if they want to excel into the playoffs. I do agree that Leinart is promising and will turn out to be a Pro Bowler.

Valid point about James. I believe that the line was his biggest issue last year though. I think that the line will improve this year and Edge will be able to grind out 3 or 4 solid seasons. I agree with you that the position will have to be addressed for the future, but I think they're fine for right now. Edge is so good on third down, he's a great receiver, and he's one of the best blocking backs in the game. I think that the Cards will be hard-pressed to find someone who gives them a better chance at winning in the immediate future. To me, Edge proved that he still has it by improving down the stretch last season. As the line and the offense in general played better, so did James. I think that improvement will continue in 2007.

Grimm may ultimately be a bigger key to the Cardinals success (or lack thereof) than Whisenhunt. The Card's line last year was terrible, which made Edge's job almost impossible and impeded the passing game. If...and it's a big if...the line can improve to even average, the Card's have a chance to slip into the playoffs. They've got a tough schedule, though, that includes games @Baltimore, @Cincinnati and @New Orleans. Anyone can win in that division, but I can't see the Cardinals doing it without a substantially improved line.

I will also take that challenge. Levi Brown will not help a horrible line, not to mention a bad bad defense.

the cardinals actually have a good defense - it has a lot more talent than the offense has, for sure. though the cardinals are known to have a talented offense because of their skill position players, there isn't much depth behind boldin and fitzgerald at receiver, and none of the backs are much good (i include james, i laughed and shook my hnead when he showed up on the cover of espn and was heralded as the solution to all of arizona's troubles; figures, espn was reporting). but leinart, if he's given proper coaching, will lead them to the promised land.

Good defense? They were ranked 29th overall. I like their pick to help out their line but I don't see much improvement on the defense. They only drafted 2 defenive players after that this year: DT Alan Branch and LB Buster Davis. Unless their offense is incredible this year, I see them as a 6-10, 7-9 team.

Defense has a lot to do with offense...and generally the draft won't effect the following year...if your team is depending on rookies this year, then you're probably in trouble. The cards running game, if it improves will help the defense...more time of possession helps the defense...i think they'll be improved

Well, if the pocket can actually protect the good quarterback they have in Leinart and their wideout corps gets to work fast, they will have a productive season. Playoffs? Probably not. Improvement? Yeah!

That's where I'm at on the issue, Broncofan. I'm looking at the Cards as a surefire playoff team. I do however think that they will be much improved. Others: Remember that their defense is very young. I think that they're a much better group of guys than people think. Nobody can argue that Adrian Wilson is a top-5 safety. Rolle is learning, Green looks like he could develop well on the other side. I think Buster Davis was a great pickup in the draft, and he could very well develop into a starter. I like Gerald Hayes, he just needs to be a little more consistent. Dansby is a good player. Dockett is one of the more underrated DT's in the game. I think Alan Branch will develop nicely, and may even have an impact this year. Berry is good, but has spent too much time injured as of late. So really, the only glaring weaknesses I see on the Cards' defense is at DE and OLB. Sure they could use another corner, and a FS to groom behind Griffith, but they're starting to gain some experience, and I think they'll continue to improve and be a very solid defense as soon as this year.
