Raiders sign 63 year old quarterback (for obvious reasons)

by user Manny Stiles

I'll be the one who does it.

I think it's quite obvious to Al Davis that Aaron Brooks fails the O!F test.

So, the Raiders signed Jeff George. Breaking news... Fire is hot, water is wet and T.O. is in the news for continuing to breathe, etc...

I think Jeff George was signed mostly because George Blanda is dead (he IS dead, right?) and Ken Stabler wouldn't make a comeback.

Seriously, even at 573 years old, Jeff George is really not a bad quarterback (There has been MUCH worse former #1 pick QBs). There I said it. He got a bad rap for various and somewhat deserving reasons but has always had a strong, accurate arm. He hasn't been that much of a winning QB, but look at the teams he's been on.

Ok, I'll also say this... evidently Al Davis has completely lost his mind...

"Just win, baby" has transformed into "Just win, maybe"

It saddens me to realize that fairly soon the sports landscape will be devoid of the Al Davises and George Steinbrenneres (all both of them). Sports NEEDS these bonerheads to keep things stirred up. I don't think the 'new wave' of owners have enough charasmatic evil and sheer will to WIN in them. Dan Snyder has the money and the evil, but come on... Jerry Jones has the money, the evil AND the will to win... BUT he is a wannabe poser compared to the REAL DEAL, Al Davis. Get some bad leather outfits and undo the facelifts/tummytucks, Jerry!

Then it just won't be the same as 'back in the day' and then I will feel REALLY old.

George may have a strong arm, but he is Top 5 in worst win percentages of QBs with atleast 100 starts.

If wins aren't realy that important in evaluating pitchers, why is SO important in evaluating QBs? He doesn't play defense or special teams. And some of the squads he's been on have been pretty bad.

I love 'Top 5 in worst' everytime. It don't make sense, but it does!

Maybe it matters more in the NFL because you only play 16 games and a QB plays the entire game while a starting pitcher eventually hands it over to another pitcher.

It doesn't matter.

A QB is one dude on a 53 man roster. Is it the QBs fault a K misses a field goal, a WR drops a perfect pass, RB fumbles in a crucial moment, special teams allows a TD return or if a defense just plain sucks???

PLEASE go back and look at the teams he played on and ask yourself if ANY QB would have done better?

You're really sticking up for George. Do you guys have some type of personal relationship or something? Are you Jason Whitlock?

I just don't like when people make conclusions out of nonsense. I don't like Jeff George, but I like a good story, LOVE a good debate/argument (maybe a little too much sometimes) and I HATE misinformation/inaccurate assumptions of all varieties.

If George starts all 16 and the Raiders go 5-11 people will say "See? Jeff George Sucks" when in reality, it doesn't matter who starts for the Raiders this year, they're DOOMED to be 4-12/5-11, right?.

thanks for keeping me grounded, Chac! (Whitlock references usually bring people back to their senses) I'm done now.

dude... he's nowhere near Julio. Franco just had his 48th birthday and plays a sport that demands more physically on the body. I know I'll get an argument there, but to get yourself ready to play 162 times would be more difficult than 16. George is a statue, so he probably gets hit a lot... but he isn't anywhere near Franco in any comparison.

I agree, there's only so many guys you can slap in the Franco debate; George Blanda, Satchel Paige, Nolan Ryan, Minnie Minoso... It was a refernce in the right direction, but a little off base

Guys, I wasn't literally saying he was exactly the same age as Julio Franco, as Julio is a freak of nature. However, 38 in the NFL is probably around the equivalent of 45 or 46 in the MLB... pretty close.

Daryl Lamonica is stewing somewhere George and Randy Moss have had some success together before.

Somewhat well documented and bizarre thing that aren't more quality QBs in the NFL. Yes, George is 1,000 years old and I wouldn't want him commanding my team. But I don't know how the average John Q NFL fan is overly happy if the following people are leading their respective teams: Mark Brunell, Alex Smith, David Carr, Jon Kitna, and Chad Pennington after his arm falls off.

i dont think david carr should be on your list. its not his fault he doesnt get a chance to throw. even the great peyton manning needs SOME time to throw the ball. granted, manning may perform a little bit better than carr if he was on the texans, but carr hasn't had the chance to show his true stuff yet. if you can remember, he was a monster at fresno.
