[edit] Biography

Rafael Palmeiro (Rafael (Corrales) Palmeiro) was born on September 24, 1964 in Havana, Cuba. He made his Major League debut on September 8, 1986 for the Chicago Cubs. In 1987, his rookie year, he hit .276 with 14 home runs and 30 RBI. Palmeiro played for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 20 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Rafael Palmeiro's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1996, when he slugged 39 home runs, hit for a .289 average and knocked in 142 runs. However, others believe that it was 1993, when he slugged 37 home runs, hit for a .295 average and knocked in 105 runs.

[edit] Steroids

Palmeiro was named as a steroid-user in Jose Canseco's 2005 book Juiced, in which Canseco claimed he personally injected Palmeiro with steroids.

On March 17, 2005, Palmeiro famously appeared before a United States Congressional hearing, wagged his finger at those present, and stated under oath, "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids, period."[1]

On August 8, 2005, Palmeiro was suspended for ten games after failing a steroids test [2]. It was reported that Palmeiro implicated then-fellow- Oriole Miguel Tejada in his failed test, claiming that a supplement he received from Tejada caused the failed test. [3]

Palmeiro is also one of the players mentioned in baseball's Mitchell Report. The report essentially rehashes Palmeiro's performance in front of a United States Congressional Committee, his failed drug test, and his subsequent attempt to blame his failed test on tainted B-12 injections.
