Racing Champion Barbaro Passes

Little racing colts in barns across the world are in mourning today as news has broken that horse racing champion Barbaro has passed away. Doctors at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital at New Bolton , where Barbaro has been a patient since last May, euthanized the champion this morning. Barbaro was four years old.

Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby in commanding fashion. Sadly, in Barbaro’s next race, the Preakness Derby, he suffered what would become a mortal injury. During the early stages of the Preakness, Barbaro shattered his right hind leg. Barbaro was transported immediately from the race track to the New Bolton facility. There, he underwent reconstructive surgery on the leg. The good news was that the surgery itself was a success. The bad news was that complications arose from the surgery and the recovery that led to Barbaro’s demise.

A debate may now occur as to whether attempting to save Barbaro’s life was worth it, or even proper to do so. We, however, live in a world that simply does not respect the value of life, including lives of animals. I believe, therefore, that it was worth the effort to try and save Barbaro’s life. Sure, the effort ultimately did not succeed, however, the lessons provided by this effort could be beneficial to all of mankind.

The saddest thought in regard to Barbaro himself is the fact that he did not get a chance at his second career, that of being a stud! Barbaro did not get a chance to graze in wide open pasture while looking for some action. Hence, Barbaro never got the chance to father any colts.

Rest in peace, Barbaro. A true racing champion!

Millions of Americans go without adequate healthcare every year, yet thousands per day is spent on keeping a horse alive. A freaking horse

I'm sorry Tartan, I'm not normally like this, but I absolutely detest when people turn the simpliest things into social issues and bend them

The owner either had insurance or footed the bill himself, I fail to see how that is wrong...You cannot fault the man for wanting to save his horse (even if it was probably just for stud fees or however that works).

I don't think its fair to draw a parallel like that. Moreover, I'm not willing to debate the merits/demerits of a national healthcare system and I don't think this is the proper venue for it

With that said, I'd appreciate if you didn't make those social type remarks, mostly because I'll respond like a douche bag (see above!)

Owners footing the bill to protect his investments is one thing. Gift baskets and cards being sent to Barbaro, prayers of Americans across the country for his health, not to mention the Barbaro Gift Fund taking donations for the horse and lining the pockets of the University of Pennsylvania, money pouring in for increased veterinary facilities, while HUMAN BEINGS starve or don't receive the treatment they deserve. It does say something about the American psyche, and it is a social issue. http://news....asp?id=33919

If you would have read the article you would have realized that the funds not only supported a vetinary hospital, but also were to support growth in the protection of PA's animal population. Having grown up in Lancaster, PA I can speak for this 1st had. Animals play a very important part in the lives of people like my central PA brethren, many of my friends and relatives are related, in one way or another, to the farming community...i.e. derive their income, lifestyle, existence off of maintaining livestock and a living - this, inherently keeps them from being impoverished...

The money doesn't go to impoverished farmer, they won't see a dime of that. The veterinary hospital at the University of Pennsylvania won't see a guy in Johnstown's steer if it sick. It costs more for him to transport the cow to the hospital than it's worth in beef product. The hospital would treat high dollar cases like Barbaro, ones with the aims of making money. Don't give me the plight of America's farmers just cause you grew up near Amish country

Exactly call it what it is. They thought they could squeak a few more dollars out of Barboro if they could get him healthy so he could bred. Once they saw there was no future in that, they put him down.

What about the veterinary practice, experience, and massive anatomical wealth gained from the endeavor? I think whatever the reason(s), money, animal husbandry, surgical/scientific knowledge, this experience benefitted man.

No, I'm saying that a racing horse with a broken leg shouldn't garner the stories, millions of dollars and concern that it did. There are far more urging things that warrant attention. As a Pennsylvania tax payer, I funded a horse to live on 3 then 2 then 1 leg for nearly a year. All the while I pass people living on the streets in the freezing cold and intense heat on the way to work everyday. Barbaro sustained injuries because horses are heavy, and need all for legs to stand, the other legs couldn't support the increased weight. Horses are not humans, they're horses.

What has gone on with Barbaro will saves lives. There has been talk of potential safer, synthetic tracks for a while, but with a big-name horse's plight will likely bring this to fruition. It's not unlike when Ruffian died in the 70's and match races fell out of favor. I expect big changes in the sport after this.

Save lives??? HA HA AH AHA!!! Well, then you're (for lack of a better word) stupid. This isn't the first big name horse to get hurt. The synthetic tracks are expensive and take away from the "tradition" of the sport. ALL of the hundred year old records will get toasted, and we won't be able to compare horses of different eras. They've "talked about it" for decades now... If you think baseball is reluctant to change, you haven't been watching horse racing for long.

The point is they jack these inbred horses up with steroids, hormones and drugs to get them as crazy as possible so they run faster, then they need to give them drugs to keep them from killing themselves when they actually race! They give them coagulants to keep from exploding blood vessels in their respiratory system. Horses aren't supposed to do what they do with them.

They keep them far away from the fillies until they're done racing and then wonder why they don't breed naturally and have to artificially inseminate them?!?!

I maybe naive, but you're a cynical jackass. I do believe in it, because this is a sport that has struggled recently. Records might be good for the sport, and bring in new butts in the seats. I'd work more on lowering the loads on these horses schedules. And if I'm wrong, well I'll be playing the violin as the Titanic sinks then, and I couldn't care less.

If an investment of mine was in threat of failing, which is what the horse was, I'll ask you to increase your taxes to help me out. Oh yeah, and then I'll tell you that I am a decendent of the Rockefellars, the Standard Oil bosses, and see how you feel about giving me money. It isn't a pet when you own 190 horses all bred for racing

I'll admit it. When the news shows hundreds of people dying, I don't utter a "meh" or shrug my shoulders. But they show a kitten stuck in a well (or the like) and I get misty. I felt bad when it happened and I was VERY mad at them for trying to "fix" him. They tortured this horse for $$$ purposes only. ANYONE who says they were trying to do what was right for the animal is BLATENT LIAR and should be damned to a hell where horses treat humans the way these idiots treat the horses.

Actual Triple Crown winners have died to WAY less fanfare than this horse (Who only won ONE big race) If he would have been hurt in a race other than a Triple Crown race on National Television, you would have NEVER heard about him. Don't get it twisted, they should have handled this immediately rather than "attempting" to save him. Anyone who has spent ANY time around horses knew he was dunfer.

Remember Sunday Silence and Easy Goer?! Now that was a great race, a classic. I would say that Easy Goer should have won the triple crown that year. Last leg at Belmont I think they switched jockeys. At Kentucky Derby and The Preakness it was close, but Easy Goer blew away Sunday Silence at Belmont.

I don't know what all you guy's are whinning about,ya he was a horse but he was a breathing creature just like you and me. So what if his owners wanted to save him they had the money to do it,nobody tells you how to spend yours, so what about the donations people donate to what ever they desire. About the starving people in the streets it's sad, but how may times have you walked past and dug into your pockets? You have a president that spends hundreds of billions on a stupid war and rebuilds countries when he cant't even look after his own, now I ask you again who has their priorities in the right place? Maybe they wanted to save him because they loved him, maybe, that's the problem with the world today a human is only a human until they are old or they can't look after themselves and a animal is only an animal nobody will miss it when it's gone....but isn't love... love

Please understand that a horse with a broken leg like that is going to die. Why prolong the pain? Why make the animal suffer? Because you "love it"? Or because there's a payday in collecting it's sperm? People who own thoroughbreds don't own them as pets, or because they love animals... THEY DON'T EVEN RIDE THEM!!! These are their investments, not animals.
