Quick Thoughts on Game 5 ALCS

16
Vote

by Npurinto

  1. Eric Wedge has pulled all the right strings in this series but Game 5 was the exact opposite. In a critical 7th inning with the Sox up 2-1, Wedge trotted out C.C. Sabathia after 106 pitches to face the top of the Red Sox lineup. Sure, he had set down the paltry bats of Jason Varitek, Coco Crisp, and Julio Lugo in the 6 th but he seemed gassed. The Indians pen has given up one run in the entire series! Use them. Rafael Betancourt relieved two batters later, but two runs charged to Sabathia gave Josh Beckett all the breathing room he would need.
  2. Taking out reliever Rafael Perez in the 8th in favor of Tom Mastny was simply dumbfounding. With the bases loaded thanks to an error, a bunt single, and a walk, Perez should have been allowed to work out of it. Since giving up back-to-back homers in Game 2, Perez, a key cog in the Indians pen, had not appeared. By pulling Perez in this situation in favor of a mediocre middle reliever, the Indians manager showed a complete lack of confidence in the young lefty. If Wedge was trying to keep the deficit at three runs, why not go to Jensen Lewis? Besides throwing gas on a fire by bringing in Mastny, any confidence Perez had after his rough Game 2 performance has now been completely eroded.
  3. Josh Beckett is good. Real good. He is intimidating and dominating and once again, pitched superbly tonight. Too bad, Cy Young Award voting concludes before the playoffs. Sabathia, the likely winner, would certainly be a distant second at this point to Beckett. A nightmare keeps flashing through my head: Beckett jogging out of the Sox pen in Game 7 a la Pedro Martinez in 1999 and shutting the Indians down, keying a Sox series win.
  4. Travis Hafner will have to go to the video room after this season. What a disaster. I have never seen him so completely out of whack. He is guessing on what pitches are coming…with nothing to show for it. He is zero for his last eight with six strikeouts. He’s lost all feel for the strike zone. He has just two walks and eight strikeouts in the ALCS. He must pick it up at Fenway Park this weekend or the Indians’ job is going to be much more difficult.
  5. With Jake Westbrook taking the ball in a potential Game 7, one could argue…I will argue that the Indians season is on the line in Game 6 and rests on the right shoulder of 23-year old Fausto Carmona. There are two ways to look at that: 1) he is young and perhaps, unaware of the pressure of a fan base, thirsting for their first championship in 59 years, or 2) if things don’t go his way early, he unravels at raucous Fenway Park.
  6. J.D. Drew will make more money over the course of his contract than the entire Indians team this season. Just so you’re aware, journeyman outfielder Bobby Kielty played in his place tonight with the Red Sox season on the line. No team has ever vanquished the Red Sox and Yankees in a single postseason. It would be a momentous effort, by a team built economically, to beat the payroll behemoths of the East.

I know, I know…the ravings of an angry and very nervous Tribe fan. I wonder if the Red Sox will buy Alex Rodriguez to replace Julio Lugo. So bitter. But that is the life of an Indians team. We’ll see what’s in store for Game 6.

Got news for you my man, they could have ended the Cy Young voting at the All Star break and Beckett would still win. The only chance Sabathia has to get the award it to break into Beckett's house and steal it.

Dude, your statement doesn't make sense. Beckett did better in the all-star break, and CC and Carmona heated up after. lol. So, of course Beckett would've won if the Cy Young voting ended at the all-star break.

Kelsdad, go look at the regular season number of C.C. and Beckett. C.C. is better in every category besides wins with something like 40 more innings pitched. Sorry.

Dude, you're not getting it. Some voters WILL vote for Carmona. Trust me. They will. It's like you have 3 presidential candidates, 2 Democrats, and 1 Republican. The 2 Democrats will lessen each others' chances of winning because they're eliminating each others' votes. Get it? Now, Beckett: he's the only 20 game winner in the MLB. Not enough? Beckett and Sabathia have the same WHIP, same number of losses, and a .06 difference in ERA (in favor of CC Sabathia). Now, if Carmona and CC were on different teams, it could be any of those three, but because they're both on the same team, you've got to believe that Beckett will definitely win it.

I think Beckett will win it, but Sabathia's 40 more IP has to count for something when it's all said and done. Wins are a ridiculous measure of a pitcher's performance, so the fact that Beckett has 20 and Sabathia only has 19 shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, the voters do look at win totals, and the 20 win plateau, as well as Romi's aforementioned split ticket vote of the two Cleveland pitchers.

Thanks Tmil42, once again. Oh, and BTW, I do believe that CC was the better pitcher of the AL individually, but like I said, it all comes down to the votes, and Beckett will most probably (the way I see it) have more votes than CC.

Beckett was the better pitcher over the course of the whole season. He was more consistent. No difference between 19 and 20 wins, there's no difference between there ERA's, there's no difference in their strikeout totals or walks. The only difference is their consistency. That, and the fact the Red Sox started hot and led the league from day one. The Indians came from behind AND it was just as much because of Carmona as Sabathia. Matter of fact, I'd be surprised if CC finished second.

Who would finish second then? Johan Santana? Erik Bedard? Fausto Carmona? I think Sabathia is a solid 2nd. If it's not him, I'd go with Carmona.

Surprisingly, JD Drew did pretty good at the plate today, and he was good in a big way. Because he was a lefty batter, Wedge decided to take Rafael Betancourt out to put a lefty in, and he still got on base. He also got a big double, and scored a run. Good win. It was essential for them to win. Now, Beckett is out of the picture, and has won the only two games for Boston so far. Can Schil win Game 6 in Boston? Let's see if he can. We'll find out in a couple of days.

If Francona uses Beckett in Game 7, he's stupid. 2 days rest for a guy who couldn't go on 3 days earlier in the series? I realize it's a relief role, but as long as they don't use Gagne, the bullpen should be fine. Boston only used Papelbon tonight, and the rest of the bullpen is fully rested.

OH! OK! THAT makes sense! Haha! If it does go to game 7, I would probably agree with you. It all depends on how each team is doing offensively. If the Red Sox offense can play good baseball and the game ends up like Game 1 or 5 of this series, then the Red Sox might crush Westbrook. If the games ends up like game 3 or 4, expect the Indians to win. Also, don't you find it funny that the only game that wasn't really a blowout was game 2?

The last time Beckett pitched out of the bullpen was July 12, 2003. I can't fathom a manager being stupid enough to bring in a tired starting pitcher over a rested reliever like Timlin or Okajima.

The day of game seven would be Beckett's day to normally throw a bullpen session, so it wouldn't be too weird. The Yankees did it a few times earlier in the season with Andy Petitte while their bullpen was in disarray, and I think even later in the season with Roger Clemens.

The Indians were 23-11 in Sabathia's starts this year, and only in 3 of those losses did he allow more than 4 runs. In Carmona's starts, the Indians went 22-10, which is basically even. Sabathia's numbers (with the exception of ERA) are better across the board, especially the K/BB ratio (Carmona: 209/37, Sabathia: 137/61). The Red Sox went 21-9 in Beckett's starts, so that stat is basically a tie between all three players.

Beckett pitched a total of 200 2/3 innings, and Sabathia went 241 innings. I say, if the numbers are basically the same across the board, the fact that Sabathia made 4 more starts than Beckett and pitched 40 more innings. I'd say that gives him the edge over Beckett.

Also, Sabathia shouldn't be punished because the Red Sox got off to a tremendous start. He can only pitch every 5 days, and he won his first 7 starts of the season. What more do you want from the guy?

Kelsdad, you are ridiculous to say that A) the Indians came from behind in the Central. I would presume that you would look at the numbers but since you won't, I'll fill you in. They spent 111 days in first place. Their largest deficit was 2.5 games all season. 2. Ohh where, ohh where to begin. Ahh yes, Beckett more consistent that Sabathia? What a joke. PLEASE LOOK AT STATS BEFORE DEBATING THIS CRAP. I am wasting my time at work responding to this crap. Sabathia had 21! starts where he gave up two earned runs or less versus Beckett who had 13. Sabathia also had 7 more starts where went 7 inning or more than Beckett. Enough said. Even Bill Simmons said C.C. should win the damn award. IF YOU WANT A LINK to that article, I'll give you that too.

All I said is Beckett's winning the award, which he will. I did check the stats, and nothing you or Bill Simmons says will change anything. Beckett is better than CC yesterday, today and tomorrow. I don't care about who had more quality starts (dumbest stat ever), or what the teams records are in their starts, (second dumbest). For most of the season, Sabathia wasn't even the best pitcher on his own team. If you want to put a little wager on it, let me know. Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

The argument is that the game was getting out of hand. If Wedge was playing to keep the game close, he should have brought in his best reliever available, Jensen Lewis. To bring in Mastny was pointless and showed a lack of confidence in his young reliever. What's he going to do in Game 6 or 7? Is Perez simply not part of the bullpen equation when the game is on the line anymore? He's been crucial to their success all year. It didn't make sense to remove him in that situation for Mastny.
