Putting Michigan into Context

It is not the biggest upset in the history of sport. Allow me to throw these into the pot.
Miracle on Ice
You rave about how a poor college team, beat a brilliant college team. This was a poor college team beating trained professionals from the Soviet Union! It was on a completely different level. Throw in the politics, and you have one hell of a story.
FA Cup
Take a look at the FA Cup in England. In the Third Round, you regularly get big teams against amateur teams. Once in a while, the amateurs prevail. Hereford, a set of amateurs, beating Newcastle United, some of the top professionals in England. Every year, by and large, there is at least 1 upset in the competition, where a poorly ranked side beats a Premier League side. All akin to Michigan.
Alfa Romeo
An outdated Alfa Romeo, that was really low quality, that had a crooked chassis, for goodness sake... Against Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union, in Germany, during the build up to World War II. All the best drivers drove the Merc and the Auto Union, yet the Alfa Romeo won! (It was the 1935 German Grand Prix, if you're interested in looking it up.)
1981 Ashes
Statistically, this has to be it. England were 500/1 when England were 135/7 in their second innings. England were 1-0 down in the series, and following on, the "kiss of death" in many respects. As the bottom of the page linked to says, they became only the second team in history to win when they were forced to follow on (they were >200 runs behind after the first innings). And this was the 905th Test Match ever played, so that's 2 out of 905 won in that position. As far as upsets go, this ranks up there. England went on to win the series, too.
So there are a plethora of upsets in sport, especially if you look further afield. Try not to be so narrow minded...
