The Providence College Friars (11-3, 1-0) upset #15 Marquette University (13-3, 0-1) 74-59 in both team's Big East opener on Thursday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
Herbert Hill led the Friars scoring attack with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 blocks. The big man got alot of great looks inside, and was able to dominate the paint. This was surpring since Providence was without their star point guard Sharaud Curry, who missed his third straight game due to a mysterious suspension (It was announced in the pre-game that he will return January 12th). Stepping in, sophomore foward Geoff McDermott took charge and dished out 11 assists to go along with his 11 points and 9 boards.
The Friars led the entire way, but never let Marquette get closer than 6 in the 2nd half. The visiting Golden Eagles were plagued by poor shooting most of the game, as they went 4-23 from 3 point land (and 31% for the game). Wesley Matthews had 16 points to lead his team. Marquette was also down a key man, as #2 scorer Jerel McNeal missed the game due to injury.
