Proof of Brainwashed Fans

9
Vote

by user I am a cpcp

The last few days ESPN.com ran a poll asking voters to select who they think is most likely to miss the playoffs. Out of 145,000 votes, 67% chose the New York Yankees, 15% picked the Detroit Tigers, 13% went with the Boston Red Sox and 5% rallied around the Chicago White Sox. Over 97,000 people said the Yankees are most likely to miss the playoffs.

Today there's a poll asking who is most likely to make the playoffs. So far 37% have picked the Yankees, 25% chose the Oakland Athletics, 14% went with the California Angels, 12% picked the Toronto Blue Jays and 10% went with the Texas Rangers.

So 67% of people think the Yankees will miss the playoffs, but 38% think they'll make it.

Is this not proof that people just see "Yankees" and click? I realize that the Yankees were the only repeated team, but if 67% of people have already said that a team won't make it to the playoffs, why would so many also say they won't? If I say the Yankees are likely to miss the playoffs, wouldn't I say someone else has a better chance to make it then them?

The second poll is still in early stages (only 2000+ votes) I'm interested to see how it turns out.

My answers, by way are Yankees out, A's in.

You are forgetting the margin of error in these polls. :)

Yeah but it's almost impossible to measure voter stupidity.

Exactly. An overlap of two or three points is not indicative of being brainwashed.

It really doesn't. Both polls have different sets of possible answers: the out of the playoff poll with teams ahead of the Yankees in the standings and the in the playoffs poll with those behind the Yanks. There are independent of one another, and could be answered with Yankees as both without being stupid.

Your argument doesn't make much sense. There is only a 5% overlap.
