Projecting Batting Stats Over 9,000 AB

12
Vote

As I'm raging with this debate about Albert Belle in the HOF, I've projected some numbers for big sluggers had they stayed on their career pace and made it to 9,000 at-bats, something only 60 MLB players have ever achieved. By comparison, Hank Aaron had well over 12,000 AB in his career. Take a look:

Mark McGwire -- 848HR -- 2057RBI

Ted Williams -- 608HR -- 2148RBI

Lou Gehrig -- 555HR -- 2244RBI

Duke Snider -- 511HR -- 1675RBI

Albert Belle -- 586HR -- 1905RBI

Ralph Kiner -- 638HR -- 1754RBI

Dave Kingman -- 596HR -- 1630RBI

Jose Canseco -- 589HR -- 1794RBI

Ron Kittle (personal favorite) -- 586HR -- 1529RBI

I guess this doesn't mean much, but some of the guys that are considered the great sluggers of all-time were helped by health and length of career. McGwire's numbers are the most ridiculous.

Hank Aaron would have only had 549 HR's if limited to 9000 AB's. Just an FYI.

Interesting stuff. There's no way McGuire could have had that many ABs with the crap he put in his body.

Great article. Why not do Pujols while we're at it?

Ray, Pujols is still active, and there probably is no way he'll continue on this pace until he gets to 9,000 AB, but at that rate he'd have 612HR and 1890RBI. It makes you appreciate what McGwire did while he was in the lineup. He's the only player in MLB history to average 50HR for every 162 games he played.

It doesn't make me appreciate McGwire at all - it just shows how much steroids ruin the game if there's such a gap between him and Pujols.

McGwire still had to have a ton of skill to put up those kinds of numbers. Other players have used steroids and still not done what McGwire did. If he took steroids, then that is a bad thing, but he was still a tremendously gifted baseball player. He did hit 49 home runs in his rookie year by the way.

If you dislike steroids, don't glorify McGwire.
