Prior Strugglin'

Oft-injured Chicago Cubs SP Mark Prior has a rough outing in his rehab appearance on Monday for the Peoria Chiefs. Prior tossed only 44 pitches in two innings, allowing four hits and three runs. "You can only do so much," Prior said. "I've been doing everything I possibly can every day and I just have to let nature take its course." Prior felt he improved his mechanics. "In these type of situations you're looking more for how your execution was, not so much what the outcome is," Prior said. "My main priority was to throw strikes and get ahead of guys predominantly with fastballs." Prior struck out three and his fastball topped out at 90 mph against the final batter he faced.

It's his first start in..what..a year? If he's doing this after two or three more, then it's time to worry.

I remember in 2000 when the Astros picked up Kent Bottenfield. After he got thoroughly shelled by the Rangers, they put him on the DL. They finally let ol' tubby go after he allowed something like 9 earned runs without recording an out in a rehab appearance in Round Rock, which was a Double-A club at the time. Just thought I'd share that story. It's my favorite story of a major league pitcher hitting rock bottom.

Lets be honest, Prior has not been the same since the 8th inning of game 6 against the Marlins 2003. So what else would we expect in his first start in a year? And lets not dismiss that he is a Cub, and he is fighting supernatural powers here.
