Born on February 14, 1864 in Germany, Pretzels Getzien (Charles H. Getzien) played for the Detroit Wolverines, Indianapolis Hoosiers, Boston Beaneaters, Cleveland Spiders and St. Louis Perfectos over the course of his 9 year career. Getzien broke into the bigs on August 13, 1884 with the Detroit Wolverines, and put up a 1.95 ERA in 147.1 innings pitched in 1884, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Pretzels Getzien's best season was 1886, when he posted a 3.03 ERA, won 30 games and struck out 172 batters.
