The Curse of Christmas became apparent over the history of the FA Premier League. From the beginning of the league, the team who was bottom of the league on Christmas Day was always relegated. This curse was broken in only the 2004-05 season, when West Bromwich Albion finished 17th on the final day. The last time any top division team had survived after being bottom on Christmas day was during the 1990-91 season, when Sheffield United were bottom of the old First Division on Christmas Day 1990 with just one win from their first 18 games but climbed up to 13th place in the final table.
