[edit] Basics

The object of Potch Ball is to throw a beachball beyond your opponent and strike the wall behind it. The score can be easily recognized by the "Potch" sound made by the ball.

[edit] Equipment

1 Large Room - Similar to a Squashcourt. Generally the room should be about 15 feet wide and closer to 20 feet long. The in play side should feature a smaller area that will serve as the goal (most likely 6 feet high and 8 feet wide, however area can differ according to preferences).

1 Small Beachball - The "Potch Ball" should be a smaller sized beachball around 8 inches in diameter and not fully inflated (rather inflated right below that point to insure a solid grip)

[edit] How to Play

[edit] Possession

Can be played by 2 players or more. To decide possession, both players agree upon a spot in which to strike and each player gets one throw from a agreed upon distance to get the closest (Similar to darts). Winner chooses possession.

[edit] The Game

The game consists of "innings" (usually 3 but up to 9) and each inning is 5 throws by each team (or player), dependent on number of players (i.e. if 3 players are on each team, perhaps 6 or 9 throws total). The "defending" team chooses one player to defend for the inning, while the other team throws.

Each team throws the ball from an agreed upon distance (about 10 feet) and attempts to strike the inner goal region without hitting any walls, floors or ceilings. A goal is scored when the defender cannot stop the ball, the ball hits the goal area and does not touch any other walls. If the defender touches the ball and it still goes in the goal, it is a goal. If the ball is thrown and deemed to be on the line, the goal does not count unless the defender tocuhed it such that the call was questionable and the default is a score (rules may be altered depending on the game).

After 5 total throws (regardless of scoring, dependent on game) the teams switch sides. The same rules apply for the second half inning with a new team defender and the opposing team throwing. The winner is the team with the most points after the total number of agreed upon innings.

[edit] Winning and Losing

Generally, you have to truly suck to get shut out in Potchball, however, should, in any inning should you be unable to score a single point, otherwise known as being Potched, you must go stand in the defender's area in a star form (arms and legs out) and not move. From their, the opposing player gets one free throw...not to score any points, just simply to throw. Generally at the groin region (as mostly guys player...because they're dumb enough to). Only 1 player, in the game's history, has ever been potched. Optionally, you may run around your home area naked...this is similar to getting shut out in beer pong.

[edit] Intricacies

On its face, Potchball seems mildly stupid, however the beachball generally provides for the most fun action and rules are usually adapted by groups of players and occasionally between a few players themselves depending on the area where the game is played. The ideal "line mechanism," that is the thing that prevents a player from getting to close before a throw is a couch or other dorm-esque furniture.

The "Potchball" itself is ideal for special throws depending of wrist action, torque and arm movement and deception in throws (for example speed) is very useful once most players become acclimated with the game.

[edit] The Name

The name "Potch Ball" comes from the origins of the game. Invented in Roxbury Crossing, MA (literally on the opposite side of the street from Boston) by 4 well endowed, slightly inhibited college students, Potchball's name comes from the unique sound of the ball hitting a blind-covered window (or atleast, they'd like to think so).

[edit] Origin

The game was originally developed out of bordem and left over beachballs from a very strange party the night before. While fooling around with the balls and throwing them at eachother's heads, those 3 wiley college 20-somethings (and one underage 13 year old...he claimed to be 19...) soon discovered that it was less painful and more fun to attempt to throw the ball beyond the person...and Potch ball was born.

[edit] Today

Rankings now feature the 6 greatest players in the world (soon to be established offially) and future games, leagues and tournaments will be established. This is only the beginning of a the way to avoid writing some crappy ethics paper that you didn't read anything about.

We did something like this as a kid, only we called it "stinker turkey" and if you got it past the other person the other person was the "stinker turkey."
