Possible Forfeiture of Penn State game looms over Wolverines' heads

And the downward spiral for Lloyd Carr and the Michigan Wolverines begins anew as Big Ten officials are determining the penalties that will be assessed against due to the use of ineligible freshman safety Artis Chambers in their upset win over the Nittany Lions; one of which could be the actual forfeiture of this game or all games played this year to this point in the season.  AD Bill Martin has confirmed that Chambers can no longer suit up this season on Game Day for the Wolverines but can still practice with the team.  Martin also said that the Athletic Department is on the hook for this incident and not besieged coach Carr since the student-athlete is only ineligible based on Big Ten rules, not NCAA.   "I take full responsibility," Martin said. "It's not on (coach) Lloyd (Carr), it's on us."

Although it's nice to hear that the AD tried to take some heat off (instead of fanning the flames) of a coach on the hot seat, is anyone else wondering when this relationship between Carr and U of M will hit rock bottom?  Really, it has been a rollercoaster of emotions between looking inept against supposed less talented teams to rising up and beating an unbeaten Penn State team poised to become the big dogs in the Big Ten.  If the verdict comes down harsh (although no indication has been given), it would be a crushing blow to an already beleaguered team and would be the final nail in the coffin of Carr's Wolverine coaching career.

You would think that the idea of the great football institution involved with cheating would've stirred up more of a hornet's nest than this? If this was the New England Patriots accused, people (and certain Tuesday Morning Quarterbacks) would lose their collective minds.

After a few more shots of Wild Turkey, Jenni Carlson is on her way up to Ann Arbor.

Did the freshman even make a difference in the game?

Absolutely. He's in charge of changing Lloyd Carr's "Depends" after every quarter.

This would be a bigger story IMO if Penn State would have beat Illinois on Saturday. If that was the case, this would make them undefeated, in contention for the BCS or the Rose Bowl.

So does this mean Notre Dame has a win...And didn't actually set the worst start in program history at 0-4? That's the bigger issue here!

Since it's a Big ten rule it only affects Big Ten games. The only game Michigan may have to forfeit is the Penn State game, not the Notre Dame game. Chambers was eligible per NCAA Rules but not Big Ten rules. I doubt they are forced to forfeit it though. That's harsh for a kid that was only playing special teams.

I agree. But since Notre Dame uses Big Ten officials, would the game be considered, for all intends and purposes, a Big Ten game?

The Notre Dame game is not a conference game (regardless of who the officials are). There fore, it is not subject to conference rules.
