Ponson to the Yanks

10
Vote

Cut by the Cardinals last week, pitcher Sidney Ponson will hope to revive his troubled career with the New York Yankees.

Yanks GM Brian Cashman said signing the former 17 game winner "...made sense, compared to everything else that was available to us."

start sizing his fingers for the 2 rings they'll win this year!!! (I say 2 rings because that's how good the yankees are, good enough to win 2 series

i tried to refrain from adding in my opinion in this article, as it is NEWS not OPINION. but why would the yanks want an overweight troublemaker with no work ethic? there is a reason he's been on so many teams and even cut by one as well.

what a ringing endorsement from cashman - "compared to everything else that was available to us". Basically, Ponson might have anger management problems, be wildly inconsistent, fit in really well with Jeff Weaver, Vazquez, and Pavano, but at least he's better than the rest of the crap out there and Shawn Chacon. Welcome to New York, Sidney!

Thanks. Yeah, the Bruschi segment was incredible, and you could tell that he thoroughly enjoyed his time with kid, rather than doing the segment for exposure. The Todd Helton segment I referred to just before was pretty sad, but it seemed like the kid had a fun time.

If I may address the original topic, I've always been a believer in the superstition that bad things happen in threes. In this case, it's bad decisions about washed up pitchers designated for assignment #1 was Jason Johnson, #2 was Jeff Weaver and lucky #3 is Ponson. The Yankees suck even more, hurrah hurrah!

thank you for getting us back on topic. Although Im a yanks fan, I strongly detested the signings of Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, Jeff Weaver, and the Big Unit. Now I have one more player to add to the list.

Good riddance...I'm a Cardinals fan and I think that Ponson's negative impact in the locker room is probably worse than his less than decent performance on the field. Not happy about the Jeff Weaver signing however, looks like Cards and (former) Yanks basically traded washed-up garbage again.

for a number 5 starter who will get everything but the pro-rated part of his contract paid by the Cards, this is not a terrible flyer. He can also be a long-relief, Ramiro Mendoza type.

How so? Do you think we are expecting anything but a number 5 who is slightly better than Chacon has been? Also, 4-4 is not a horrible record on the cards.

I've always been in favor of turning mediocre starters with UNTAPPED POTENTIAL into relievers. Although it usually doesn't happen, for the rare occurances when they do, it pans out well. I think Ponson should be added to the bullpen, like you said, as they need bullpen help. I believe the same was done with Joe Nathan. He once was a mediocre starter; now, he is a dominating closer.

exactly, you don't think Sir Sid could pitch the last out of the 6th, plus the 7th, in a 6-3 game where Wright runs out of gas?

YEah, I'm not too high on Ponson, but I do believe he'll make an adequate reliever. He did win 17 games, but that was probably the peak of his career.
