(LOL!) Yes, there are so many amazing Chamberlain records. Did you know they didn't keep stats on blocked shots when he played? His numbers would have been insane. And he played every second of 47 straight games without taking a rest.

Chamberlain is, by far, the single greatest player in NBA history. An argument for anyone else is futile. He may also be one of the greatest athletes who ever lived. Some of the things he could do athletically, basketball or otherwise, are pretty much impossible for anyone else. Just ridiculous.

That's so true. And I can't believe people say that he's overrated on a bunch of other sites I've glanced at before. Just because he "didn't have many other great players, and not many talented centers against him." Seriously, that just makes me want to to hit my head against a wall.

Food for thought: if Chamberlain is by far the single greatest player in NBA history, what does that make Bill Russell, who flat-out shut him down him every time they went head-to-head? Hmm, maybe Russell is actually the greatest of all time...

Although I never said that Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest of all time, I have to be indifferent on whether Bill Russell is superior to Wilt Chamberlain, or vice versa. Getting 55 rebounds while going head to head with Bill Russell isn't that easy. However, winning 11 championships in a 13 year career is quite an accomplishment. And BTW, Russell grabbed 50 rebounds in a game once. It's a shame that he had to deal with such racism in Boston.

That just isn't true, Davis21wylie. On Nov 24th, 1960, Wilt Chamberlain had the most rebounds in a single game, 55, but lost to a Bill Russell led Boston Celtics team - 132-129. Russell scored 18 points, 19rebounds and 5 assists. Chamberlain totals were 34 points, 55 rebounds and 4 assists. Boston was a better team than Philadelphia, but Chamberlain always had better numbers than Russell.

During Chamberlain’s historic 1961-62 season, he led the league in: Points, Rebounds, Minutes Played, Field Goals Made, Free Throws Made, and Player Efficiency Rating. WILT scored 30 or more points in 65 consecutive games, and scored 50 or more points in a game 45 times. He had a streak of 7 straight 50-point games. He also scored 42 points in the 1962 All-Star game. And yet, somehow, despite not leading the league in any category, Bill Russell was named league MVP. It’s fair to assume that Chamberlain was so dominating that the NBA of his era took him for granted and under-appreciated his greatness.

Having more points and/or rebounds does not mean Wilt had "better numbers". What was Wilt's FG% in those games? If Wilt was only scoring 30 on his customary 40 shots per game, I'd say Russell shut him down. How many shots did Russell block? How many did he alter? Clearly Russell was neutralizing Wilt somehow, because the Celtics won more often than not against Wilt's teams, especially in the playoffs.

Bill Russell: 11 titles in 13 years playing in the NBA, which betters Wilt Chamberlain's 2 by a long shot. That's REALLY saying something, especially with Wilt Chamberlain in the mix during most of those years during his career. I'd much rather have 11 championships than all the individual stats that the Stilt has.

Bill Russell played with Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Tom Heinsohn, Sam Jones, and K.C. Jones. All of them are Hall-of-Famers. Cousy was even an MVP himself. Wilt Chamberlain had no such luxury. If Wilt had switched teams with Russell he would have won all those titles also. You cannot base greatness solely on championships won, which is a team accomplishment, otherwise Robert Horry and Steve Kerr would be considered two of the greatest players ever. Wilt Chamberlain dominated the NBA during his time like no other basketball player and few other athletes, ever have. HE OWNS 56(!) NBA RECORDS, many will never be broken … and this wasn’t even a Wilt versus Russell poll. It asked – “Which is the Most Impressive Wilt Chamberlain Record?” We got off-topic, somehow.

Bill Russell did not flat out shut him down, Davis. There is no evidence to show that. Wilt outplayed him almost every time they faced each other. As the author pointed out, the Celtics were dominant because Russell had a half dozen Hall of Fame teammates, Chamberlain got his teams to the Finals every year by himself. You know I respect your opinion above everyone else's on this site, but that was a fackin' ridiculous statement.

And this is about the greatest player, not who played for the best team. Chamberlain could do things on the court no one else in history could do, and skill wise he was far above Russell. And before you try and debate me, read this book, "The Rivalry", in which Russell himself admits as much. Chamberlain was by far the greatest player in NBA history, and if you equate greatness to the number of rings a player has, then you really don't get it.

Just to clarify something Kelsdad, I'm NOT saying that Bill Russell is a better basketball player than Chamberlain is. I'm just saying I'd rather have the career that Russell had than Chambelain had. That's just my opinion.

However, think of it this way, Kels. Russell only had 13.4 field goal attempts per game. Wilt, however, had 22.5 field goal attempts. Of course Wilt's going to score more points.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Russell is better. I'm just saying that Davis may have a better point than you think.

Look, forgive me if I'm not overly impressed by the feats of a 7'1"/275 athletic freak in a league where the average player was 6'5" and 65% of the players were white. Russell was 6'9" and he held Wilt to 28.7 PPG head-to-head (Wilt's overall average from 60-69 was 35 PPG), plus who knows what FG% he limited Wilt to and how many shots he blocked. I'm not saying Russell is better than Wilt (Russell himself said something like "I couldn't stop Wilt, I could just try to slow him down"), but I am saying that Wilt dominated competition that was far weaker than what he'd see today, and that a 6'9" center was able to (some would say greatly) reduce his effectiveness... That doesn't scream "easily the greatest of all-time" to me. One of the greatest? Sure. But not the greatest.

You would be impressed if Chamberlain played in the same era as Jordan, or if he played today.

Because he would still be the best player.

By far.

BTW, did you guys know that Chamberlain is the reason why the "Defensive 3 secs in key" rule was made? A friend's dad of mine told me that he used to watch him play, and he would just stand right under the basket and block every single shot an opponent made, or at least get the rebound as soon as the shot bounced off the rim.

Yes. He is also the reason for goaltending. Chamberlain could touch the top of the backboard with ease, shots that were 12-15 feet high in their arc he could block with no problem. He would just jump up in the air and catch the ball with one hand, he wouldn't even swat it away. Like I said, ridiculous.

The defensive 3 in the key rule didn't exist until the NBA began allowing zone defenses in 2001-02, so I'm pretty sure Wilt wasn't the reason they instituted it.

One of my favorite Chamberlain stories happened after he retired. He was having difficulty adjusting to being non-competetive, and struggled to find things that challenged him. One rainy, Sunday morning, he got up, and saw in the newspaper the Los Angeles Marathon was that day. He got dressed in his warmups, drove down to the starting line, signed up and ran.

He finished in the top 30% total, and in the top 12% in his age group.

He had never run a marathon before.

Nobody ever jumped high enough to block a 15 foot shot, moron! Goddamn Olympians could never do that. Stop exaggerating. And if Chamberlain blocked "every single shot the opponents took", then the other team would have only free throws and Chamberlain would have won EVERY championship. State your opinion, but don't flat out lie.

Thanks Romiezzo and Kelsdad for engaging in this topic. I wish I could enjoy your baseball topics with you, but I'm lost unless you talk about Greg Maddux (we went to the same high school). Anyway, thanks again, are here are a few more Chamberlain facts: WILT owns the top 7 best rebound seasons ever. He led the NBA in rebounds 11 times. And MY FAVORITE WILT CHAMBERLAIN RECORD: WILT led the NBA in assists in 1967-68, with an average of 8.6 APG. He had the most assists of any player in the league that season. No other center has ever led the league in assists.

Chamberlain qualified for the 1960 Olympic team. As a long jumper.

He had a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs as a wide receiver, he beat All-Pro cornerback Willie Brunston so badly the Chiefs offered him a contract on the spot. Chamberlain said no, he only wanted to be a QB.

Chamberlain hated off season weight room workouts. When Butch van Breda Kolff took over the Warriors, he forced Chamberlain to attend weight sessions. He asked what was the team record for weight, someone said 225 pounds. Chamberlain put 230 pounds on a barbell, and lifted it over his head three times, turned and walked out. Oh, yeah, almost forgot. He lifted it ONEHANDED.

CRAZY! Absolutely CRAZY! Wilt Chamberlain is a beast, simply put. A natural athlete who doesn't have enough recognition from fans all over the world. People give Jim Thorpe credit for being a natural athlete. I'd have to say that a person who doesn't even need to train to run a marathon, was a wide receiver and quarterback, as well as a center in basketball, and a long jumper for the 1960 olympic team, I'd have to say that Wilt the Stilt needs some recognition...

Here is the bottom line. Russell was allowed to cheat to keep the NBA legitimate. If you ever watch games from that time, Russell is hanging, grabbing, pushing and the refs let it happen. If there was a level playing field, Wilt averages 70/game. One last thing: There were more good centers in the 60s than today: Bellamy, Thurmond, Russell, Wilt to name a few....
