Should Collegiate Athletes be Paid by their Schools?

YES. They create revenue for their schools and they should earn a paycheck for that.
NO. They are already paid with a college scholarship, paying them would make them employees rather than students.

They are being paid with an education. In the end, the majority of collegiate student-athletes will make more money off that education than they would make if they were paid to play in college...

Paying players would take away the mystique of playing for the love of the game...

Student-athletes are receiving an education, playing a sport is just a perk...

Yeah, just look what's happening to people in professional sports today. Greed is taking over this entire world, and if we decide to pay collegiate athletes, what the heck are they gonna do? I say BAD IDEA.

Yes they are being pay in a way with the tuition and scholarship money, but that doesn't give them enough to live on. They should receive more scholarship money in the form of working during the off seasons. In other sports getting paid to usher etc.....what they receive besides books, tuition and fees and room and board isn't enough when you compare what they bring into the universities funds wise. 10's of millions of dollars in football revenue and basketball money to all the NCAA schools from TV and radio. To really pay them a set salary is an extremely bad idea, that there is no question and it does make them employees not collegiate athletes. Romiezzo is quite right GREED is the bottom line in college athletics now. Millions come in to the ruling power NCAA and that makes them one of the strongest group in sports. Control is the bottom here and the NCAA doesn't want to get rid of it. Without the football and basketball revenues college sports would not exist as they do today. Give them more spending money but do not pay them as employees.

Very good points, Oldest Man. I not quite sure why "spending money" isn't the same as paying them, but I understand your overall opinion of this subject. Thank you.
